If I'm not mistaken this and Re:Zero are your first anime that were adapted from a light novel. These kinds of adaptations usually have a big problem: too much information is left out, sometimes to the point where the story doesn't make sense. Mushoku Tensei is considered one of the best adaptations because it omits very little, but there is still some information that didn't make it into the anime and it's a shame (although it's not really that relevant to the plot but it helps to understand the characters better) so if at some point you feel really caught by the story I would recommend you to read the novel and get all these details, otherwise I can summarize it a little bit in each episode. - In this world polygamy is one of the most normal things there is, so what Paul did is not uncommon to see. The reason why it was more serious in this case is because Zenith comes from the country where the largest religion in the world is located and where polygamy is forbidden. - I think you confused what Rudeus said, when he said that Paul assaulted Lilia he was referring to something that had happened many years before as they learned swordplay together when they were younger. - There are stories from Lilia, Zenith and Paul's past (that even make you "understand" Paul a little bit) told by themselves that were not adapted in this first season, I won't tell them in case you ever read the novel. If at some point you feel interested I could send you to the discord at least the pages of the novel that tell these unadapted stories.
