- The captain can't participate in competitions, although in chess he may give directions to the player who is participating. In my opinion, he chose Horikita because she is one of the few who knows his abilities and is easier to work with. - In the light novel Hirara tells Ayanokoji about his past during the cruise exam to explain why he pretended to be Karuizawa's boyfriend for so long. This makes his change not so abrupt. I guess in the anime due to time issues they decided to leave it out plus it helps keep the mystery more and when Hirata changes his personality it's more shocking. With this in mind the discussion between Ayanokoji and Hirata in this episode must have been a bit different in the LN but I don't know since I haven't read the corresponding volume yet. Great reaction.
