Bartleby

This film was directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. And if you ever got those beer commercials in Europe for The Most Interesting Man in the World ad campaign, Jodorowsky could definitely qualify for the role. He is a man of the world who met many of the most iconic and influential artists of the 20th century! Alejandro Jodorowsky is also a practicing magician and one of the worlds most renowned experts on the Tarot. Jodorowsky made his first independent film in Mexico in 1968. The film was titled Fando & Lis. It had its world premier at The Acapulco Film Festival. Here was this debut feature film from a young unknown director. Well the film incited a riot at its premier and police had ti whisk the director Jodorowsky away from an angry mob who were intent on killing him. This was Jodorowsky’s introduction to the world cinema stage. Part of Jodorowsky’s inspiration for this film was a chance meeting he had with a real life serial killer, Goyo Cárdenas in a bar in Mexico City, His story is a fascinating one. He of course was captured and imprisoned for his crimes. This real life serial killer’s relationship with his mother and father mirror the dynamic shown in the film. Cárdenas suffered mental delusions and was prone to psychotic episodes. Police found the bodies of many women ritually buried in the yard of his house. However, after serving many years in lunatic asylums and prison, his severe metal illness under regular treatment, he was believed to have been genuinely rehabilitated. He was actually released from incarceration and lived an ordinary life as a practicing lawyer until the day he died. He is believed to be one of the only rare cases of a serial killer being rehabilitated. Jodorowsky took inspiration from this chance meeting with this real life serial killer, but also from his own childhood and life in Mexico. Alejandro Jodorowsky’s father was a very strict stern man who worked as a circus performer for a time. Santa Sangre takes inspiration from real life, but is ultimately a work of fiction.
