Platoon v Paths of Glory

Of all the war films on the elimination poll, Platoon is the only one to be directed by an actual war veteran. Director Oliver Stone enlisted and served in the US army and fought on the frontlines of the Vietnam war. None of the other directors of the other war films on the poll ever saw a single day of combat.

That is an excellent point, but it doesn't change my opinion about any of his films.

There’s no accounting for tastes. It’s my opinion that Oliver Stone is one of the most unique, innovative and brilliant visionary filmmakers of the 20th century. From the mid-80s on, Stone made masterpiece after masterpiece. And even before then Stone was writing the screenplay for classic films that left an indelible mark on the culture, such as for Scarface and Midnight Express, which he won his first of many Oscars for, for writing. Given that he won the Oscar twice for best director, and that so many of the actors in his films were nominated for and won various Oscars fora acting, I’m not exactly offering a hot take here. I have no interest in arguing with you on any specific points as those would be spoilers. If he’s not to your tastes, well those are your tastes.
