You know you’re a true Marx Brothers fan when you get excited about seeing Margaret Dumont on the screen.

Groucho was a huge fan of Gilbert & Sullivan. Dick Cavett said of Groucho "His only prejudice that I ever noticed, I think, was against people who don’t dig Gilbert & Sullivan." Groucho performing on his own TV show: a G&S duet with his daughter. https://youtu.be/53SlhNi02As?si=eGxPS59x1qMrQtNb Groucho would sing G&S on Cavett’s show. In 1960 he performed in a shortened version of Mikado on TV. The DVD can be found on walmart.com.

I’m really looking forward to Animal Crackers! I know it’s not considered their best and that many like their later movies better, but for some reason Animal Crackers has always been my favorite. The earlier movies are more stagey than the later ones, but that’s because they were stage plays that were made into movies. Also, if you can find it anymore there is a book called “Why a Duck” about the Marx Brothers lives and careers that I think you would like very much.

The Cocoanuts was a very early talking picture (1929. For comparison, City Lights was released in 1931.) The techniques were very primitive. In order to prevent the sound of the camera motor being heard, the camera was in a large sound proof booth, eliminating camera movements. This is why it has such a static feel. Also, to prevent the sounds of rustling paper being picked up by the microphones, every piece of paper in the movie is soaking wet. The songs were sung live with an orchestra off camera. This explains the poor quality of that sound. Hollywood would soon learn to record songs ahead of time and film the actors singing to their playback. Finally, they had not yet learned that what plays wonderfully in the theatre often does not translate well to film. Within a couple of years of this movie, Hollywood had learned and was making wonderful musicals and comedies with music. A Night at the Opera actually has as many musical numbers but they are woven into the film so well that it works.

I had to look up "alligator pear" ... apparently it's another name for an avocado. I'll have to start calling them alligator pear.
