So which did you think was more convincing? Sean Connery’s Irish accent or his Russian accent? 😝

"Crimson Tide" (1995) is another thriller taking place aboard a nuclear submarine - this time it's a U.S. ballistic missile boat, referred to as a 'boomer'. It stars Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman, with James Gandolfini in a supporting role.

Would highly recommend. Das Boot (1981) Another great submarine movie.

Submarine service is consider in all navies to be an elite group because it requires so much technical training. In the U.S., it's expected that each member of the crew will learn a basic understanding of every system onboard the boat in addition to their rated job. This earns the crewman their 'dolphins' which you see pinned to their uniforms or coveralls in "...Red October" - silver for enlisted personnel and gold dolphins for the officers. These days I think that the dolphins are printed or embroidered on their coveralls so that they don't lose their metal dolphin badges in the equipment. Also, the U.S. Navy now has female crew members which is different than when a friend served on fast attack boats in the 1980s. I don't know what changes were made to accommodate female personnel since there are limited toilet and shower facilities, as well as 'hot bunking' for sleep arrangements in limited space.

Defect means to defect from your country of origin, of citizenship. To defect from The Soviet Union then is to leave the country, renounce your citizenship from your home country, and seek asylum in another nation. There were many defectors from communist countries throughout the 20th century. A defector need not necessarily be someone of political or intelligence importance. It is simply anyone from that nation who is formally leaving it. FYI Most communist countries do not tolerate defectors and will consider it treason.

You did GREAT Job keeping up with the movie. Tom Clancy books (movies) have a ton of details and military terms that make them hard to understand. By the way it is 36C here in Oklahoma today.

Alec Baldwin is a low life murdering scumbag.

Roger Freeman

I've always liked this movie but I prefer the b&w wwII submarine movies. Something special about the men who went down in those old school subs. Especially the ones who went into Tokyo bay to set up the Doolittle raid

Sean Connery wasn’t ordered to attack the United States. The Red October is a Ballistic Missile Submarine. Which means it has nuclear weapons onboard. Many, many times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If it were to launch it’s missiles, it would start a Nuclear War. This is what it was designed for. And Ramius didn’t want it ever to be used. Which is why he decided to defect (Denounce your own country and seek asylum in another.) He sent the letter to make a statement. If he just left and said nothing. The powers that be in Moscow could have thought the sub had a malfunction and sank because it was on it’s maiden voyage.

I won the lottery last week Dawn. I will give you £1m if you go down in a submarine 😊Great reaction Dawn to a great film. The Abyass is a another sea/water film, SciFi

Shame on whoever gave a like to this hate speech. True or not, this is hate speech.

MertzRocks

That's right, Dawn. His orders were actually to test his new sub against the Russian naval forces (including their other nuclear submarines) to prove that it was READY to perform its designated mission. I think this was your biggest point of confusion. And since you did not have captions translating the Russian dialog (and idk why -- I did have on Google Play), you missed some important stuff in the beginning.

Michael Hartsell

That right, I hate that liberal piece of shit!! For you information no there's such thing as hate speech, only freedom of speech "Article One of the US Constitution"! Now if you want to pick a fight puss here I am.
