I love this show so much and am excited to see someone else experience it for the first time

Firefly was definitely a uniquely dark & slightly retro sci fi universe unlike almost any other & whether you like it or not, being different was the point & the glowing heart of the show too. It's a "dramedy" as far as tone of the series overall with everything else sprinkled in you can imagine! The civilization of this future, which Earth exists in but is never seen, is a mix of Southern style English & Chinese speaking citizens. They live under the threat of an "evil" Alliance of Worlds being the govt & leaving the poorer & less civilized worlds to literally fend for themselves on their own until forced to ask for govt help. Then they only help if their interests are satisfied or they profit. The Empire of Star Wars tried to rule everything by force & enslavement in that universe. Here, we see frontier people & their worlds struggling to survive because their Alliance govt & their rich worlds don't care & lets them die on their own unless they submit willingly. Thus, a great divide between rich & poor in their society exists & that opens up opportunities for all kinds of Shades of Gray on both sides for all the people. That's how this crew of "Robin Hood" like thieves came to be & their efforts to survive are the charming story here. I admit, I skipped this show when it was on. Having spaceships & worlds in the future was cool! But shooting bullets, no lasers & SO much injustice & poverty mixed with rich privilege was a mix that I wasn't eager to embrace. But years later, I tried the whole series fully & fell in love with it. Is it perfect & ideal, no. Is it perfect for what it is & represents? Yes! This is a western in space that stays as true to being JUST that as possible. Accept that & enjoy it for what it is. Stories about human nature set in a unique future that is pretty fun to get used to, mostly. Once you do, it's hard not to love the heart & excellent stories this show tells. Light & dark still struggling with each other.
