With the performance in this film and in James Bond's "Skyfall", Javier Bardem is a spectacular bad guy!

The film's unusual structure works to highlight that this is a philosophical film dressed in neo-western clothes. In fact, Ethan Coen studied philosophy at university - and I detect the influence of an 18th century German philosopher called Kant on this film. Kant argued that strategic calculations should not form the basis for moral actions. For example, if we make a promise, we should keep it, regardless of the consequences. And that's why Chigurh goes to kill Moss' widow even though there is no strategic reason for him to do it. All he is doing is keeping his promise which was morally solid (unlike the offer Carson Wells makes to Moss, which is a bunch of BS). But then Carla Jean highlights Chirgurh's morally weak offer to revise the promise based on a coin toss - no, she says, you have to take moral responsibility for your action and not just defer to the chance fall of a coin.
