Sure, the CCP wants to cover up the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre. But there's something that happened in Tiananmen that they're even more intent of making sure people don't remember: hope. Shelley joins us as resident Chinese person, whose uncle was in Tiananmen during the 1989 protests.

On June 4th, 1989, I was at a friend’s house, watching CNN. I was with a bunch of friends, which included a couple of men I served with in the National Guard. We knew what was going down; we had expected it. Eventually CNN was able to show a few still photographs. One of them that stands out in my memory. It was of a tank engulfed in flames. Apparently, a demonstrator had hit it with a molotov cocktail. I turn to my then squad leader and commented, “They got one!” I remember mostly feeling totally helpless. There I was, an entire ocean away, with people, some of who could kill tanks, and powerless to do anything. I kept hoping that something would happen. The army would change sides, or the international community would do something, but in the end nothing happened. In the long run, governments such as these cannot last. They will eventually collapse, and we should take a bit of comfort in a line from George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” “There are always survivors.”
