I see the Christmas special as cannon. I read it as the guy didn’t want a meeting with him but was contractually obliged to do so. I’m still not sure about the laughter track I don’t think it’s needed.

They go into it a bit more in the book. Basically, Alan was constantly contacting the BBC to arrange a meeting and Tony Hayers just agreed to conclusively tell him it's not happening so he'd stop asking.
