This would have run after the early strip today with Ruth and Carla!  Now, I kind of wish I'd actually run with this one, but chose not to at the time because:

1) I was afraid it was cannibalizing some dialogue exchanges I was expecting to happen in upcoming strips.

2) I thought it might've explained characterization too plainly without letting readers simply understand it from everyone's words and actions

3) With everyone pointing at each other and shouting "HA!  AUTISTIC!" I was worried that I might as well change the title of the storyline to "The Gang Discovers They All Have Autism."

But in a belated answer to all of those: 1) ehhh, maybe I should've tried to make it work anyway, 2) lol, *side-eyes comments section*, should have just made it more explicit, you fool, and 3) Now I think that might've been rad, oops.

You may consider this one psuedo-canonical until when/if I figure out how to address its spirit canonically.

(no it is not feasible to splice it into the buffer at this point)

Having seen it now, I know where you're coming from here, but I think the actual COMIC exists better without it. As some other people say, it doesn't leave space for the audience to ponder, and I think you want us pondering.

Wait 10 years then retcon it in to the extended edition with a new John Williams soundtrack and Sarah shooting first and no one will notice :)

I was gonna make a joke about *Oprah Winfrey meme* "Everybody gets autism!" but discarded it bc I fell asleep and didn't like the joke enough to post it anyway and possibly hurt someone's feelings, so it's somewhat comforting you kinda did the same

I had a somewhat similar idea for a drawing of Dr. Kaur sitting in a Lucy Van Pelt-style “The Doctor Is In” booth, with all of the characters lined up. (Someone created a glorious piece of fan art years ago recreating the dance scene from A Charlie Brown Christmas, with Peanuts versions of the DoA characters. If someone could find that and post a link, I think anyone who’s never seen it would enjoy it.)

A simple solution to make it canon without having to queue it: run it as June's 2nd bonus strip ;)

That's cute! I like it. I have an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis, and I always cry at Benji movies.

Oh, Sarah. Low-empathy is ALSO a potential autistic trait! (Which is not mutually exclusive with having compassion or sympathy. Totally different traits and brain things!) I suspect I made a good decision in avoiding the comments the last week or so, then.

The comment section on the main website have definitely been a mixed bag lately. People aren't giving conversations between characters the opportunity to play out through multiple strips and aren't allowing characters the opportunities to learn and grow. It's like if character A says something in the moment the reader construes as mean they're just in the comments like "I can't believe character A is such an awful person why are any of these characters friends with them" as if we haven't been reading through the past 12 years of content

Yeah, I think it would have been better to have this in the main comic. There's a difference between "readers pondering" and "readers thinking the storyline is abrupt and dropping in quality", which has been true for many readers I've seen.

Has anyone suggested this as a flashback down the line?

I took issue with that for people commenting on a different (furry) webcomic, that because the first human introduced in the series was evil, All Humans Are Evil and how dare not giving a single chance for the ENTIRE REST OF THE HUMAN POPULATION to show they're, uh... human also once someone complained during updates that the artist loved dragging things out, but when you read the pages all at once, the pace is perfect

The good news is that Willis plans to address it canonically at some point, which'll be cool.
