This strip got me thinking about something vis a vis my thoughts on Ethan since the timeskip. This right here is another strip where Ethan passively exists next to a more bombastic character and he's sad about something, except that passivity is being used to tell the new status quo of Ethan as essentially emotionally dead to the point where he can't even play Reasonable Straight Man or Dithering Caretaker anymore. He's not going to class, he silently marches to eat, and some loud weirdo can't shake him anymore, he's just totally checked out. Gooood it is nice to care about Ethan after all these years. Like he takes that same sense of being kind of a pathetic and vulnerable person and then it's just cranked so hard for maximum drama, it's great.
