Walt Kelly, creator of Pogo, once had an expy of Sen. Joe McCarthy, called "Simple J. Malarkey". One newspaper carrying the strip warned "If we ever see his face in your strip again we'll drop Pogo". Kelly then started to draw speech balloons over Malarkey's face all the time. Problem solved.
