Dear Juice Media Patrons

Here's the latest Honest Government Ad you've made possible - and our final one for 2023!

Visit the UK!

After the great response to our first UK Honest Government Ad last year, I promised we'd make another one this year... and since the UK has an election coming soon (it can't come soon enough tbh) I thought we'd lend a hand, by reminding voters there of some of the bullshit to expect as the election nears. And about tactical voting.

It's pretty lame that UK voters have to resort to "tactical voting" - it makes me appreciate all the more the (much fairer) preferential voting system we have here in Australia, where you can actually vote for the candidate you most like, without worrying about "wasting" your vote. But in lieu of such an electoral system in the UK, I thought I'd use this HGA to remind voters there of the need to vote tactically to circumvent their crappy FPTP voting system. So if you have friends and family who vote in the UK (preferably ones who don't mind some swearing) please share this HGA with them.

This is our last HGA for 2023.

Thank you for supporting our work this year.

I am aware of how hard the cost of living crisis, inflation and interest rate rises have affected everyone this year. So I want you to know that I am humbled by, and deeply appreciate your continued support of our work during this time.

I've tried to add more value to the HGAs this year by focusing on issues and perspectives which I feel have been lacking in the public discourse - from electoral reforms and crackdowns on protest rights, to RBA policy and Indigenous resistance movements - topics which are difficult to communicate because of their complexity (and sometimes, sheer dryness). I feel like this is the best way of making your financial support really worth it - by channeling it into areas where there's a dire need for better public understanding and literacy of such topics.

If you have any suggestions for topics you've like me to cover in 2024, please drop a comment below!

We'll be taking a short break over the christmas and new year period, before launching into a new year of HGAs.

The other day, my son Luca (who is now 6) told me I work too much. He's right. I draw some comfort in knowing that the work we're doing here is helping to address some of the very real problems he might face later in life. Nevertheless, finding a balance between work and being a present parent is my greatest challenge at the moment. I'm sure many of you with children can relate to this. So, over the next few weeks I'll be focusing on addressing this and spending some undivided time with Luca and Juno.

For the past 7 years I've put together an end-of-year video in the last few days of December. This year I decided instead to make a December HGA and to focus on being with family during those last days of the year. But fear not, I've collected a nice set of bloopers and behind the scenes goodies over the course of 2023, which I plan to put together in the new year. So stay tuned for that :)

Until then, I want to wish you and your families a safe and hopefully restful time over the new year period. I hope you can carve out a decent chunk of time to be with your loved ones - and to recharge before you get back to work. I know many of you here do important work in the world. And for this, I want to thank you.

With gratitude
Giordano - and the Juice Media family / team

Thanks for the expert feedback David, I'll take this on board. It's a fine balance between keeping the momentum at the right pace (which helps with engagement and to create the feeling of an advert) - and ensuring people can follow. Maybe I didn't get it quite right on this one - sometimes we find the videos are too slow; other times that we may have been too fast! That being said, I'm not super worried about people not reading all the text, especially the headlines. Those are mostly there to indicate that there ARE sources for our key claims - for those who want them - but I imagine most people don't read them!

I see the problem—how would you pause the video so people could read, without pausing the video. The bias is towards the speaker, so you’re right—most people are probably not reading them. I think the way you present headlines makes it clear that all your assertions are based on fact—a signature feature, and a compelling one. Signals credibility. I will tell my internal panic not to worry—we can attend to the nice lady(s) and simply trust the evidence. More fun that way!
