Dear Patrons

Here's our latest Honest Government Ad which you helped us to produce. I had a fair few requests from you to cover this, so I gave it a shot!

It's a good topic request, one with potentially big consequences for the world - especially Australia.

It's also a messy topic, as I realised when reading about it. Which is why I wasn't as quick off the mark with this one.

At one point I thought it might be best to leave it alone. But then I remembered that messy topics are precisely where it's helpful to provide some perspective.

I mean climate change used to be a REALLY messy topic. Today the conversation has been largely normalised, so it's so much easier to write about it. Wich I suppose is why so many people are doing it today - which is great.

But back in 2009, when I started writing satire about climate change, for Rap News, and probably up until around 2015 - writing about climate change was an occupational hazard! There was so much toxicity around it. But even though it courted a lot of abuse, I am so glad I did it anyway.  

Unlike climate change however, this issue isn't so clear-cut. There's a lot of bullshit flying around on all sides. And I didn't want to just say "China bad!" or "China's done nothing wrong", which seem to be the two opposite extremes of those views. So I tried to provide a synthesis of some sort.

One thing I did want to take a very clear stance on, however, is that when addressing "China's" conduct, we're not talking about China or Chinese people, but about the CCP. Which is why the HGA makes that clear at the very start.

Ok ok... that's enough rambling from me!
