Colorful Melody (Thailand, 2023)

Yup, good effort, you’re right Tita! Another area where there was room for improvement was with the English translation, which was quite a bit rougher here than what we normally see, so I think that led to some of the ambiguity too. So yup, there were some clichés, like the meeting in childhood bit, which leads to the entirely odd (and unexplored) position of Day’s dad having no idea that Day has met Mem in Sangklaburi, I mean, Day’s dad knew enough about Mem’s whereabouts to be in contact with him about getting the surgery, and he must have known where his own son went to teach, and he’s got Mem’s paintings of a guy that could be Day playing a violin… so I think that there are some pretty cosmic gaps in the logic here. In some ways Colorful Melody feels like a film school grad project, showing tons of promise, but still needing more experience behind it to get something really good. Anyway, everyone involved probably recognizes the shortcomings, but can both feel good for what they accomplished while having ideas for where to improve in the future. That would be in sharp contrast to the people putting out Twins, who don’t seem aware of what a swirling eddy of stupidity that show is, or the people putting out Middleman’s Love, who do seem to know, but just want to poke us viewers in the eye. Give me Colorful Melody over either of those anytime (but have Tutor play Day in the remake please). Cheers!

Okay, now that I’ve typed that, I can’t stop seeing Tutor and Yim in these two roles. Yim in Buddhist student mode (as opposed to Jade mode) could have handled the Mem character, and I do think Tutor conveys emotions better than Ter does, so a version of this story with Tutor and Yim that fixes the following issues would be welcome by me: 1) explains Day’s journey of accepting the kiss, even if it takes the same number of days to come ‘round, instead of yanking us out of Day’s headspace suddenly (and why did we see that kiss twice, with slightly different endings?) 2) foreshadows Mem’s health issues, instead of a revelation 80% of the way through that just feels tacked on to force a cranked up end to the story (I mean we already literally have violin music here, do we also need it figuratively?) 3) either gives the father full knowledge of what’s going on, even if he’s observing the two from a distance to allow them to deal with their situations… OR …drops the clichéd met in childhood thing entirely, as there’s no real reason it needs to be Day’s father covering Mem’s tuition or potentially paying for the surgery, that could be any rich “uncle” 4) drops the ambiguity of the ending. I’m okay with most films that end in places where we get to write an ending to suit our own understanding of the characters… but Colorful Melody seems to continue past the ending without being clear. Did Mem move away and simply stop communicating with Day’s dad and Day and everyone else, or did he die and his friends just can’t bring themselves to say so directly (and if he did die, like, they wouldn’t call Day?!?!?!?!). If you’re gonna show us the end, be clear about it!

This was a gorgeous movie. I was just so confused whether he was still in surgery or died in surgery. I would have cried if I knew what was going on. Happy that he survived. 💕
