The Eighth Sense - Episodes 7-8

Trauma reaction. JaeWon was bearly functioning these episodes. I wish he had punced that jerk more. EunJi treating JaeWon like some price to be won says alot about her character. JiHyun child hood friend and AeRi are real ones. JiHyun near death experience has made him braver, and he's willing to fight for what he wants👏🏿👏🏿.

Vita

He is obviously deep into the replaying of the trauma. But mostly, he is protecting JH. Yes, reacting to the trauma he would have probably (try) end things with JH anyways. But he is being overly aggressive to show everyone they were NOT together going back to the ex… harsh words to JH to stop pursuing him.

I seriously needed to be restrained to not slap those two seniors. That is the point I hate in Korea where respect is considere as granted due to solely age. Respect should be deserved by action and words, not granted by ages. Tae Hyun is the perfect character to show how jerk some people are by simply asking ''respect'' because is older while he is just a tyran, a bully who use the hierarchy system imposed by society. In episode one I already felt that shadowy cultural norm in Korean society would be adressed and it is, in a very direct way. That is actually one of the main reason why bullying is such a plague in Korean school and workplace. The struggle of Jaewon is intense, the trauma so deeply rooted in him, even with time it will never fully healed but that psychologist is way too harsh I think. I really love now Ji Hyun, his accident made him less introverted. He became bold to adress himself to the disciplinary council, which, by the way, is just a tool to enforce the enslavement of young mind to blind obedience (older have the right to bully etc...). I call that mental alienation.

EunJi is so jealous of Jaewon it's ridiculous! The Ex is so stupid. I love how JiHyun called her on her crap. I hope there is a happy ending. I don't like JaeWon spending all this time alone. At least he's still going to therapy.

This episode was painful to watch. First I wanted to jump through the TV and strangle those seniors. I get you sad about your club but someone almost died. You're supposed to be more mature and for your younger pupils to look up too. I was so happy when JaeWon punched his so called “friend” As for JaeWon he’s was traumatized by the accident and reliving the pain of losing his brother. He blames himself in both accidents. I feel for him. JiHyun definitely change after waking up for the better. One of the reason I love about this series that it tackles mental health. It’s still kind of taboo specially if you’re an Asian male.

I am actually stunned by the performance of Oh Jun Taek, who plays Ji Hyun in this episode. It is his first role, he was literally cast on the streets of Seoul. He was walking in Gangnam and one of the Directors saw him and asked him if he was an idol - he said "no", and then he asked if he was in one of the bands and he said "no" again. I think he was just studying Business Management or smth. But that scene at the end, when he tells Jae Won how he loves him or the scene with Eun Ji - my god, you would never say he never acted before. He must be a natural. He was actually cast first and then they were looking for a Jae Won long and hard, and had a huge number of auditions and Im Ji Sub got the role because they thought they suited each other best... Well, they were right )). Everybody understands why Jae Won reacts this way, he said it himself to the therapist - "I put him in danger". By rejecting Ji Hyun he thinks he will keep him safe...It was an accident of course, but Jae Won knew that Ji Hyun did not know how to swim and to surf when it gets dark and there are big waves...It's a no-no for beginner. Jae Won should have known better. Excitement got the best of him. Maybe that is also why he feels guilty.. Transformation of Ji Hyun is tremendous, my god!! Was it love which gave him confidence, gave him wings or the escape from the death? He came out to his friend, he defended Jae Won during the Disciplinary Committee, he stood up to Eun Ji, he found a courage to talk about his feelings to Jae Won, he even went to drink cocktails )). He knows who he is now and what he wants. And look - he is not a "country mouse" any more, he has great friends...What a transformation. I am not worried about him any more, he will be fine with or without Jae Won (as his boyfriend), really. The wounds of Jae Won are too deep and some wounds can never be healed, unfortunately. It is good that they address the mental health. Have you seen the deleted scenes they released? Omg.. Yet, I do not think Ji Hyun is the right person "to heal those wounds", Jae Won needs professional help and so personally (maybe not a popular opinion) but I would prefer they do not end up together. Jae Won should fix himself first. He already broke Ji Hyun's heart twice - when he ignored him after that kiss on the beach and now when he rejected him. Ji Hyun is pure, innocent, honest and happy and I want him to lead a happy life. He does not deserve to suffer. But his heart is his heart of course and he decides what to do with it. Last but not least - those bloody seniors...Tae Hyung deserved more than one punch.. He wanted Jae Won be suspended, he wanted him to suffer because he was jealous of him all his life. At the same time saying that he is his friend. He said to the Committee that he wanted to punish Jae Won "to eradicate the violence in school" and the first thing he does - he violently kicks the doors as soon as he hears the verdict. He insults juniors...Hypocrisy, and nobody cares as if he is untouchable..Because he is a senior?? How Jae Won could let him be around, be close to him - that is a poor judgement of character. Also, Eun Ji pushing Ae Ri just because she is senior and a junior cannot respond in kind??...They are "lucky" to live in such age- hierarchical society, because you know, in other countries nobody would care senior or not - she could have been pushed back so hard that she would regret ever touching Ae Ri that way....And saying she likes a “fair fight”.. Since when she was fighting fair? That scene in the restaurant where she was abusing Ji Hyun, she calls it fair? PS: the Hegwig guy deserves A++ in my book, he asked all the right questions..plus what an outfit 😁 On the screen behind him was written “Deny me and be doomed”…was that a message to a certain somebody ? )) PS2: who else is missing Jae Won’s smile? I am. JW, get better soon

I really can't stand Tae Hyung or Eun Ji, they are just horrible people and the worst people to be around Jae Won 😔 please embrace the good in your life Jae Won and get rid of all the toxic people around you please. I feel so bad for Ji Hyun.

You took the words out of my mouth, though I disagree with you on your take on Ji Hyun and Jae Won's relationship. First, Ji Hyun is generally more positive than Jae Won, but there is no such thing as a pure human being. Second, some wounds never heal, you simply learn to live with them and their sequealae. Mentally ill, or suffering people diserve love and partnership as well. Ji Hyun has seen Jae Won in the aftermath of a mental crisis and has been pushed away by him, but he still wants to be with him. For me that proves him to be at least for now mentally prepared to deal with Jae Won and all his trauma.

Vita

Age plays a role but not as much as hierarchy. Once introduced as something either higher or lower rank, it is very difficult (if not impossible) to come out of that power distance dynamic.

Well written, thank you. Every episode, from ep 1 first encounter, I kept mumbling please don't hurt him, please don't, pleaseee🙏🏽 but of course he didn't listen. Somehow in the last episode I felt a relief because Ji Hyun got stronger, exactly like you described. He grew a strong spine. At this point I think that for Ji hyun best will be to keep away but it will break my heart Having said that, probably Jae Won can only be "saved" by him. It's a tough one.

Nathan

Yes, that was my point too.. let’s see how they will deal with it during the last 2 episodes 💖

TitaJosie

I really understand JW and love him immensely, however I have to agree that he was a bit harsh towards JH when they talked (though we know why). 😭💔

Vita

He was indeed. But I see it (err as it might be) an effort to protect JH from himself even. It’s hard.

TitaJosie

True. I'm not sure that JW's issues will be sufficiently resolved before the end of the series in order for them to get back together. 💔

TitaJosie

The guilt that JW felt was tangible and so thick you could cut it with a knife. 😭💔

TitaJosie

Yes to all of that! I also find it hard to imagine them getting back together considering JW's state at the moment. 😭💔

Jasmine

Loved this comment. You thought of everything I wanted to say. Though I want JiHyun and JaeWon to be together JaeWon is dealing with a lot right now and I'm not sure a relationship is going to solve it. They can maybe stay close and be there for each other since JaeWon needs that but a relationship is much heavier. I'm really curious about the last two episodes and how it's all going to play out. I would be fine with an open ending since this show seems like it would go that way. I really hope people try to understand JaeWon though from what I'm seeing most people seem to be sympathizing with him. I've never dealt with something as tragic but I've suffered with major depression and I could relate so hard to the way JaeWon is suffering and trying to deal with all the outside pressures. It's so difficult to want to connect with others emotionally especially since he already has trauma he is dealing with from the past. You're also so right about the actor playing JiHyun. If I didn't know he wasn't an actor before this I would believe he had been doing it for years. Some people really have all the talent and luck 😂

I’m glad Joon Pyo is on board now, even if his on-boarding scene was total BL trope factory product! Ji Hyun has needed a sympathetic ear to talk to, so it’s good that he’s leaning towards more openness with his boss and Ae Ri too. I still wonder if Yoon Won will be the one to help bring Jae Won out of his protective shell. The throwaway line early in the series about her being lesbian can’t stay a throwaway forever, or I’ll be disappointed. I think she can help Jae Won deal with both his guilt over this newest accident and his sexuality… and in the meantime, of course we’ll see him in therapy again, he needs that more than ever now. Looking forward to some big time turnaround for Jae Won in our last two episodes… …oh yeah, and an EPIC TAKEDOWN of Eun Ji!!
