If you haven’t read George Orwell’s “1984” yet, I highly recommend it. The novel is set in a dystopian society in which the government, led by the authoritarian figure Big Brother, controls all aspects of life, including history and the truth. The Outer Party members who work at the Ministry of Truth are responsible for creating propaganda and rewriting past & future historical events to fit the government’s ideology. Winston, the protagonist, works at the fiction department within the Ministry and inducts a completely fabricated character named Comrade Ogilvy into the history books. Orwell explores many themes of censorship and also the importance of critical thought. 100% worth a read.

Yeah, it’s a classic. Although the film adaption was enjoyable and captured the essence of the book reasonably well, I found that it fell short of my expectations. The images and ideas I imagined while reading the book were not quite the same as what was depicted in the movie. After finishing the book, I tried reading Brave New World, but it’s much harder to visualise the text in the same way that I did with 1984. If you’ve got time, can you do like a book-club episode reviewing the books you’ve read? Similar to the Mein Kampf episode.
