Hello!
Big/exciting news:

  • I have signed with Mountaindale for the Audiobook production of the first three Millennial Mage books. Release date TBD.
  • I will also be releasing the epub version at the same time as the audiobook.
  • This process will also result more/new cover art for all three books! 🎉

Things of Note:

  • Transcendent Patrons will be given access to the audiobook audition recordings (and script) when I have them. I'll enjoy hearing their feedback, but the final choice will still rest with me.
  • Archon Patrons will get access to the audition recording for the narrator I select, after a selection is made.

The Poll:

  • Please read through the whole thing, as I have combined a couple of items into a single poll. (You can vote on as many options as you like.)
  • These are things I am considering, and I would like to know your thoughts.

New Payment scheduling:

  • The good: If I switch to subscription payment new patrons will always be charged on the day of the month that they initially joined. Continuing patrons will still be charged on the 1st. This should level out Patreon ups and downs, and make joining equally valuable at any time of the month.
  • The bad: If I ever have to take a month off, no new patrons can join durring that "off" time. This will make it harder for me to even consider that, regardless of other details. (The bad here is it might lead to a drop in quality for a time, if I feel like I can't take a break in the event of such a need. I would try to never let this happen, but life sometimes throws curveballs our way.)

Patron Shoutouts on RoyalRoad:

  • Do you all like the Patron shoutouts? I am happy to do them, because you all are awesome, but if you don't care, there really isn't a reason for me to continue. 😁

Congratulations for the audiobook being published!

In the end do what's easier for you. My experience with the old patreon billing cycle is minor annoyance, and then I either wait or cave in and 'waste' money. Its never ended in my not subbing. I would just do your patreon shoutouts around the beginning of each month if you keep the old model.

If you think it will cause you potential issues, just stay with the standard billing mode. It isn't a big deal either way for subscribers. If someone was going to subscribe at the end of the month and they hold off to the start of the next month, that's fine. But if you feel it would pressure you to not take breaks you need you're setting yourself up for problems.

This. Just realize if you DO take a month off you can always just stop payment for your Patreon‘s for that month. I would much rather this happening than you just disappearing for a month and nobody Hearing from you. That happened to one of the other authors that I support and it’s not fun.

As the others said, do what feels right to you. Also awesome news and congratulations on the audiobook! Probably one of my favorite book publishers, too!

Will the epubs be the release version eBooks with professional editing?

all right dude so i finish an audio book about every 2 days when i can get away with listening to them at work lol. my list of narrates based on how much of a range they have and how amazing there voices would be - Andrea Parsneau -Travis Baldree - Jeff Hays + soundbooth theater, and then a bunch of other voice actors that are good voice actors but that cant really do female voice's and the MC is female sooo, no point listing them even tho they are really good. then theres female voice actors that can do ok male voices -Tess Irondale - Natalie Naudus - Reba Buhr - and then there's dual casting for a male and female voice actor, soundbooth theater dose some of that as well as having some times like 5 narrators for different voices. just please for the love of all that is right and good if you go dual narrator don't have them switch between chapter's every once in a while some one thinks its a good idea like "Branded" but its just terrible, have the male voice actor do the male voice and the female the female voices.... unless you get Andrea or jeff they can do male and female voice so well its crazy. i probably care about this more then most just because i grew up super dyslexic and couldn't read at all until 13 and even after that listened to more book then read. so many good books have been ruined by shit narrators imo. a good narrator can bring a story to life and a bad one can make it so so much worse.

In terms of subscription model: whatever feels best for you, though also I would be completely fine if you need to take a break to keep my subscription going for at least a month without content, as long as there is good explanation why, especially if it helps with hospital bills or whatever else might be needed

I think the old billing makes more sense if its easier for you to take breaks using it. The new system just seems to create unnecessary pressure to avoid breaks and plenty of authors already burn out using the normal one. I also doubt that the new system would make enough of a difference in the subscriber count to be worth the downsides. You do you tho.

Tis being edited as we speak, and I'm looking at doing Kindle Unlimited, at least for a bit, for the release.

I appreciate the thoughts! Yeah, Mountaindale is being fantastic with the selction of narrators (so far). We're getting a bunch to send in auditions, based on a script I put together to test how they read various types of content. If I don't like any who audition, we'll keep trying. 😁

As MM is one of the few Patreons I support consistently it doesn't matter to me if it changes or not and I can live with a break either way.

Jackson Ragland

If it makes you feel worse about your ability to take a break don't swap, same could be said about you feeling like your income is less variable though. Do what feels right for you

Personally I prefer subscription based billing. I tend to become a patreon for various authors always only for one month in a row, then re-join every couple of months (I prefer bulk-reading). So I pay the monthly rate no matter if you take off for the month or not. Just doesn't feel so great if I get only a few days worth out of a tier because it happens to be the end of the month. If the "not billing for a month" feature doesn't exist for the subscription model then I assume people who stay as patreons for longer would prefer that and care less about the billing date. I'm curious what the rate is of multi-month vs single-month patreons. I would have assumed the majority would be single-month but the voting result seems more skewed towards multi-month.
