Finally got to come back and finish this. You know initially the first couple of times I heard Jet Black Heart on my own the sound of the song just wasn't my thing. But I went and looked at the lyrics after you talked about it and listened to it on my own. You know I like it more now, it does have some really strong lyrics that really make that song impactful. The broken home song was my other favourite song. I mean my parents are still together, but some of those lyrics still applied interestingly enough to an unhappy home. I can't say I am as big of a stan as you, but I do love these guys.

Yes they still perform some of these songs live. i saw them in concert and they are so good! so much fun! This is most of the fandoms favorite album from the boys. My favorite is definitely their newest one and then this one and then CALM. are my top three. their setlist from their newest tour that just ended sadly has a few. And my favorites from this album is Jet Black Heart, Safety Pin, Waste The Night, Vapor, and Broken Home. And one thing i love about this album is you can see the essence of who the boys are as artists now in this early of their career lyrically and how they sing and play their instruments. If you listen to all their albums on repeat like I do LOL you can see essence of the boys back then with who they are now. Like now that i'm listening to this album again I can definitely tell that Luke and Michael wrote Catch Fire without even having to look at the credits. And you wondering who was singing that part in Safety Pin it was Ashton! 'Once I had a little taste. Now, I'm addicted to your fix. Oh, yeah, this time, maybe this time. Two wrongs make it right' and the verse right before that was also Ashton. Also in Castaway when asking about that line it was Michael and Luke. In Broken Home Luke, Michael, and Calum wrote it. When you love them as long as I have you can pick out those things without even thinking haha. The setlist that was for their Take My Hand tour (newest tour) and it was really well arranged. But highly recommended seeing them in concert they are TOP TIER Waste the Night and Jet Black Heart is on that setlist.

I'm only halfway through but i wanted to say, 5sos have written like. 99% of their songs, so if you're ever wondering that, then the answer is probably yes (i feel like the only exception is amnesia on their first album and a few of their collabs?) so anyway i think michael calum and luke co wrote broken home, and as far as we know both ashton and calum have divorced/separated parents so it's definitely from experience.

I'M SO HAPPY YOU LISTENED TO THIS OH MY GOD So sorry for what's about to follow but this is my favorite album and I have a lot to say and you also had a few questions so essay coming your way I guess lmao. SGFG is definitely a more angsty teen/YA vibe but imo that's exactly why it's so important and why so many of us are emotionally attached to it. Plus they turned this era into like a movement for teenagers and YA with mental health issues or fitting in issues etc. I was 17 at the time so it really felt good, it was a really intimate relationship with both other fans and the band. I saw them perform this album on tour back in 2016 and it was the most incredible feeling truly, especially when they played Jet Black Heart. It's also considered the Michael album because of how many solos he has and how it's basically his entire vibe and style lol. Speaking of Michael, he wrote jet black heart (which actually is about mental health and his own struggles and my absolute favorite song of all time, it hits hard for me) and broken home (about his family which ended up fixing their relationship after his parents heard the song), which means a lot to me personally since I've been through that. He wrote Emotions for 5SOS5 too. He's also the one singing in those parts you asked about in Castaway and The Girl Who Cried Wolf (also mental health issues). The second verse in Safety Pin was Ashton! You were right about Hey Everybody (they sampled Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran) and Good Charlotte (they're actually really good friends and mentors to the guys), they've written together for years and the Madden brothers really supported and helped 5SOS at the beginning of their carreer. Anyway, again I'm sorry for the extremely long message, I clearly can't shut up about this album 😅

Hey! Just wanted to say that Luke, Calum & Michael wrote Broken Home (not just Michael) & Calum & Michael wrote Jet Black Heart (not just Michael). I also disagree that Sounds Good Feels Good is considered 'Michael's' album...both Luke & Calum have more solos than Michael & the pop/punk sound was their sound (as in 5SOS as a whole). I think this one is considered more a collaborative album - in that they all had singing parts. I also think this is more a fans album because like you said many people were going through mental health issues/family issues etc so it absolutely makes it relatable. But you are right - it is a lot of fans favourite album 😊

I think this may be fav album of theirs.....!!!!

Maria

I know they co-wrote jet black heart and broken home but they were his ideas/are about his life and experiences as far as I know and from what I've seen from the band in the 9 years I've been a fan. I was not trying to discredit anyone, I'm sure these songs mean a lot to all of them, but they are considered his songs. At least by fans if nothing else. Which is also what I meant about sgfg being "his" album, like most of the fanbase considers this the album he's the most prominent (idk if that's the right word, English is not my first language) in, same as people think CALM is Luke's album.

Hey Travis! Glad to see your 5SOS discovery continue!! I really can't wait until you get to experience them live - you will love them so much more!! I'm hoping you can react to some full-length concerts or at least some live performances!! My fave albums are definitely 5SOS5 & Calm - I just think they have shown so much growth & their newer music is just amazing. I definitely still love ALL their music but I have to respectively disagree (😉) with your thoughts on the writing...their latest album 5SOS5 & the solo albums have the best writing in my opinion. There are definitely some great songs on SGFG but nothing that matches something from 5SOS5 or WFTTWTAF. But I think certain songs invoke certain memories & feelings & that just can't be ignored. For you it was Jet Black Heart & Broken Home. I think Broken Home is exceptional & was a song that was really needed (I also come from a broken home so it just hits the feels a bit more!). There also wasn't (& still isn't) a lot of songs about issues like this - which is why so many fans gravitated towards this album & those songs in particular. My fave songs off SGFG would be Waste The Night, Outer Space/Carry On &Broken Home. To me SGFG is nostalgia...it just takes you back to another time. Looking forward to more 5SOS!! 😊❤️

Long comment incoming: Money: Perfect start to the album. She's Kinda Hot: Co-written with Joel and Benji Madden. Hey Everybody! :Also co-written with Joel and Benji. Permanent Vacation: Good Charlotte was also my favorite band growing up. Can't wait to see them at WWWY! Jet Black Heart: My top-played song of theirs, ever. Always played live. Their version for the 10-year reunion is incredible. Catch Fire: Sounds so much like One Direction. Safety Pin: One of my favorites to blast in the car. Ashton's voice is the person you hear singing. If you like this song, you'll love Voodoo Doll! Waste The Night: Still played during SoundCheck often. Vapor: Major Good Charlotte and Blink 182 vibes. Love it so much! Castaway: Michael's voice just shines in this song. It's so amazing to hear live! Girl Who Cried Wolf: Gives me major Simple Plan vibes. Broken Home: So underappreciated and slept on. Makes me think of GC The Story Of My Old Man. Fly Away: Feels like it should be on Blink 182's California album. Invisible: Also major Simple Plan vibes, with Blink 182 mixed in. Especially that little guitar riff they play. Airplanes: Sounds more like a Yellowcard or Boys like Girls songs. Too generic and commercial. San Francisco: One of my favorites to blast in the car. Totally grows on you, but sounds like it should be on their first album. Outerspace/Carry On: Amazing live! Like, bring you to tears it's so good live!

Personally I think this is one of the albums with the best track-placement I have ever seen/heard. 1-4 Simply just fun 5 Still Rock/Emo, but much deeper lyrics and darker sounding 6 A lot less hard-hitting and even a bit of Acoustic 7 Back again to the fun "harder" songs (but this time with much more interesting/deep lyrics in my opinion) 8-10 Some more songs that are just fun like the first 4 with a bit more variation in instrumentation and intensity (even within the songs themselves) 11-12 Some really deep and emotional songs with quite a hard shift in instruments 13 Thrown in a "simple" happy song to make you not too sad (and completely throw you of at the beginning because at that point you have settled into the calmer feel of the tracks before) 14 Another Deep and emotional song with more stripped back instruments 15-16 A bit more generic songs (which I don't mind after the songs that came before 17 Probably one of the best closers I know. The first part really has elements from almost every song of the album (and those extreme high notes from I think Ashton in the "bridge"). Then close it with a completely different yet in my opinion still fitting sound that in my opinion closes the deeper themes in this album quite perfectly (and the style still fits in my opinion because of Girl Who Cried Wolf, Broken Home and Invisible) This is a project where I mostly listen to the whole album and not just a few songs and also that I have shuffled way less than other albums. As for personal favorites I am quite unsure but I think: - Girl Who Cried Wolf and Outerspace/Carry On for their amazing (in my opinion) arrangement (and Girl Who Cried Wolf also for some very interesting Drums and Rythm) - Broken Home and Invisible for their lyrics and difference to most of the others - Jet Black Heart for it's tone (though I like it considerable less than most others and it is probably not right at the top of my favorite songs from them right now) - Catch Fire and Safety Pin because I think they are very well executed and also have some great rythms, drums and great vocals - From the first 4 at this point probably She's Kinda Hot (although that definitely was a lot different at the beginning and could change again) And also just for context. I also am very new to 5 Seconds of Summer, having only discovered them in 2022

I’m going to be the one to say it, Vapor is their most underrated song!

Debbie

I guess this is why music is subjective! 😊 Everyone gets to have their own opinion & relates to songs differently. I've been a fan for over 10 years & all the people I know that also love 5SOS have never called this album Michael's. Maybe some fans do - but I certainly don't. I think it represents where they all were at the time & their joint experiences. I have heard Jet Black Heart beclaimed as Michael's song...but never the whole album. I don't think any album in a band that is so inclusive to all members ideas & input would ever be considered one persons. But that's just my opinion! 🥰

Maria

I think you might be reading that as too literal. No one says it as in Michael owning the album or being the only one responsible for it or whatever. It's more in the sense of the album people associate the most with him and yeah I guess it's not everyone but I've seen a big part of the fanbase feeling that way 🤷🏻‍♀️ Of course we all have our own pinions and feelings about music and an artist's work, as long as people can have a conversation about it, you know 😊

Finally upgraded and now I can listen to music! Why do I still remember all the lyrics to She kinda Hot, I don't even remember learning it lol!!
