My problem with the show (as someone who is Autistic) is that they don't SHOW that there's a Spectrum. Basically every Autistic character on the show is the same Stereotype and it just got really tiresome for me.

I watched the first season and liked it cut then I saw a bunch of reviews by autistic people and I cannot continue to support the show. It’s really sad that a show about such an important topic just f***s up this badly. They’re supporting an organization which is actively responsible for killing autistic people, one of the main actors uses the r-word very frequently, the guy who plays Sam is not autistic himself, there are a lot of situations which are offensive for autistic people and so on… the articles about this show are very informative and i highly recommend reading about it. I’m fine with people enjoying the show but it’s always important to be educated.

I feel like someone is always going to be offended by something - not saying who's right or who's wrong. The way I look at it is that there's a spectrum. Where this character falls on the spectrum might be vastly different than where others or most fall on it. We can't please everyone in the world unfortunately.

I've seen criticism but also praise of this show from members of the autism community. I think there are obviously shortcomings but they did listen after season 1 and hired autistic consultants and actors. As someone who works with teens on the spectrum I'm happy the topic got some exposure and think many of my students would be able to relate to Sam.
