Hey folks. I dunno how much I've talked about this but I've been returning to "inking" with a lot of enthusiasm. It's allowed me to approach detailed technical drawings like this one, the way I want to without losing a lot of speed. Some of it is thanks to a new inking brush that I've been working on. But a lot of it is sorta coming from a new philosophy.
I'm trying to be quicker at putting out completed art. And part of that is just sorta rolling with imperfect lines more often. It's okay to get the next one right, instead of trying to fix the one that's only slightly messed up. It adds to the character anyway. And I'm trying to keep my hand moving faster, even while inking. If I keep a certain pace, it remains fun.
Another thing I'm trying to do, is to keep the pencil layer very loose. Nothing is more disheartening than trying to draw the same image multiple times over. And if you're doing pencils that are 90% close enough to a finished image but not enough to publish, then trying to do another pass with inks, is just really draining. So I'm trying to avoid that.
A third thing I would like to make note of, is that this drawing really started on the iPad. I'm going to be incorporating that into my workflow more often. It's actually improved to the point where it's getting hard to tell what parts were done while sitting down in front of the couch watching television, and which parts were done at the work desk. I'm definitely FASTER at the desk, but if I need to take some time and take it easy while working. The office couch MIGHT be an option now.
All this conversation has been about workflow stuff, and not the character... I have to admit. I don't have anything in mind for her! I just call her "Bug Hunter." I think I've been playing a bit too much Death Stranding. And it's definitely been on my mind in terms of designing things.
