I think... because for lack of a better idea, I think I'm going to name them Hannah and Handsy. Because Handsy seems like the kind of fun name a kid would make up for their imaginary friend.

Handsy is, a pretty unusual concept for any kind of character. In a way, Handsy is just another aspect of Hannah. Like, all of Hannah's Id or Ego (I forget how that's supposed to go) all wrapped up into one projection. However, in this fantastical scenario, Handsy IS her own person. It's not like Hannah has been possessed, or is dealing with a Jekyl and Hyde scenario. Handsy has always just been there for Hannah. And they like each other a hell of a lot.

And Handsy is a LOT LESS shy about getting what she wants, and dressing the way she wants. Even if the only person she can impress that way is Hannah, Handsy knows exactly how to get the most attention from her.

See ya guys Monday.

IIRC, your "Ego" is just your consciousness. The "Id" is everything that you need to suppress, both good and bad, in order to fit into society. Psychology isn't my field, but if I'm understanding things right pretty much every mechanic of how Freud thought things worked was disproved long ago, but he's important because people still consider the basic framework of his ideas to be important, in this case that we have to suppress certain things in order to have an orderly and functional society and that that can have bad effects on our mental well-being.

Handsy is definitely the Id, almost entirely pleasure driven and willing to do whatever to get it. The Id contains the libido and is entirely sub-conscious. You could make the argument that Handsy was originally going to possess Hannah, but Hannah's SuperEgo was so well developed (social norms, suppression of the Id, etc) that the Alien grabbed what it could wrest from Hannah in the form of part of her Ego and part of the Id by using the self defense mechanisms of Displacement, Disassociation and maybe a dash of Delusional Projection/Projective Identification. So the short of it is, the Alien tried for Hannah and couldn't 100% Possess her so it broke off the less well nailed down bits of Hannah that maybe she wasn't using or actively fighting in therapy or some such and managed to move into Hannah's hand and make itself... at home. And with a roommate like that, you either love them or hate them ;)

Pretty much. Freud's overarching theory (everything is a projection of the Id's repression, etc ) got tossed a while back, but he remains respected because of his groundwork on the fundamentals of the human mind and such which is still used.

So do they share a body? Take turns using it? Not quite sure what imaginary means.
