one of my favorite blogs is Stray Cat J, run by the Japanese "landlady" of a formerly stray, flame-point siamese cat named Mr. J. A little while after taking in Mr. J, Landlady adopted a younger cat named Kofuku ("Little Luck"). They get along very well, but Kofuku is very mischievous and likes to tease Mr. J.

I've been wanting to do a drawing of both cats for a while, and was recently struck with inspiration after reading a recent post about both cats enjoying the kotatsu, which is a low table with a heating element underneath and an attachable blanket for keeping the warmth in. Since many households have a kotatsu, it's a common winter symbol in Japan, along with mandarin oranges and the thick lined jackets Kofu and Mr. J are wearing in this drawing. I was kindly given one of those by my Japanese host family at the end of my year abroad in 2012, and it's still probably the coziest garment I own.

The japanese kana at the top of the picture read "kofutatsu"-- a pun with "kotatsu" and "Kofuku".

Thank you! I highly recommend reading the linked blog (“@straycatj” on tumblr) and learning more about Mr. J and Kofu, if you aren’t already familiar with it!

I thought the hiragana "ta" was "n" in there, reading the description it makes more sense now lol
