some very overdue fanart for Nona The Ninth, the third book in The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir. This isn't a moment from the book-- it's a mental image that I had that originally was going to be a much looser, more cartoony picture, as  a "cover image" for a fan playlist I'd made*. But as I started sketching it, it became a more ambitious picture, because I got really attached to this idea as something that represented Nona as a character: an intensely joyful, sweet, and peaceful person who found endless ways to enjoy her everyday life despite living in an active war zone on a world literally under siege by the ghost of a dead planet (among other things that made her life very unusual). If she'd had a tape player to carry around, I think she might have liked finding a quiet moment like this now and then.

To those who have read the book-- instead of her iconic cheeseburger t-shirt, she's wearing her beloved "Salt Chip Fish Shop" shirt that she mentions wearing in a later part of the story. Her t-shirt collection is important to me.

also I'm sorry that I forgot to take more screencaps while painting... I just got way too into the groove. I love painting rock and concrete! Next time I have to set a timer to go off while I'm painting, to remind myself to come up for air and actually take screencaps of the process.

*listen to Nona Beats on spotify here! Validate my good taste in music. (first 9 songs are for nona, the rest of the playlist is for assorted other characters)

thank you so much! Adine I think you might like these books, actually-- they're very creative sci-fi/fantasy with a lot of humor and character-driven drama.
