this little guy is all finished up! This was the first time I've been asked to "axolotl-ify" a character of a different species, and I had a lot of fun. I also enjoyed drawing the props-- I need to draw more robots!

I started with assembling reference material drawn by the commissioner, and drawing my base sketch:

then I inked the sketch, using a textured brush from one of Kyle Webster's excellent brush packs for Photoshop:

then I put down the background color and filled in everything with a base color, so that I could lay the actual colors on top as masks and not have to worry about coloring "outside the lines".

painting was straightforward. Flats:

shading (with blue, pink/orange, beige, and a little purple, some on multiply layers, some not):

some highlights:

all that was left was to do some general color and saturation adjustments, and then I called this done!
