I recently read a tutorial on Twitter about a fun way to quickly grab a color palette. You start with a photo that has a color scheme that fits what you want to paint:

I chose this fruit bowl, because I knew I wanted a sunny color scheme.

Then, if you're using Photoshop, you slam that sucker through Filter --> Pixelate --> Mosaic and make all the cells nice and chunky, then bam! A harmonious color palette all ready to color-pick from while painting.

I wanted the color scheme to be a little warmer than what I got just from filtering the photo, so I adjusted the brightness, contrast, and color balance of the mosaic before using it to paint from.

I'm not very confident in my own color sense, so I really like this technique. I can see myself using this a lot from now on.
