The image is a screenshot from Unity showing off the outline shader I've been working on and it was a test to see if it looks like a drawing and I'm happy with the results. I quickly whipped up a 3D model of Quagmire's house just to work with in Unity. I'm still trying different methods for outline shaders in Unity but I believe I might be switching over from 2D backgrounds to 3D backgrounds. I have a lot of experience in 3D and if I can successfully make my 3D backgrounds look 2D then I might do all the scenes in 3D with 2D sprites for complex objects like trees, bushes, skeletons(Halloween decorations), etc.

Tell me what you guys think. Should I stick to 2D backgrounds or should I go all out with 3D or combine the two?

i dont really know mate, can you put a comparison? personally i think that you should do something that is easier for you , of course quality is important, it really depends if the quality/time effort worth it.

Focus on what's easiest, it's your first project. If you aren't super satisfied at the end you can remake the game later down the road with more experience or something. I think you really need to focus on just forward game progress so you have something to show off publicly and draw in more funding.
