Each time I make a debit in my checkbook register, my heart clenches with worry. I’ve never had a money management problem. I tell myself I still don’t. But cutting out the basics has made me wonder to what extremes I’ll go.

My uncle slips me a fifty to cover gas for the trip home. I shove it into my pockets and don’t pull it out until Helmut is bagging my purchases at the liquor store. I get back a few singles and some coins, slightly horrified that so little remains.
