Tired of darkness, Bozhena spent the rest of her phone battery on a pen-pal app. A random guy from free Liverpool wrote, “This fucking app fucking pisses me off. I mean, really, why not add some more fucking functions?”

She mused. “Why do you say ‘fucking’ all the time? Are you fucking?”

“No, LOL. Just frustrated.”

Bozhena looked around the dim room, listening to the distant booms behind her boarded window. “Russians shell my city daily. We have blackouts every other week, and I don’t remember when was the last time I ate meat. Trust me, fucking doesn’t help.”
