YES! :) I've been waiting for this! I love this movie and have seen it many times. Thank you for reacting, can't wait to watch it with you! It is actually based on a semi-autobiographical novel called The Short-Timers by Gustav Hasford, who also worked on the script. Like Joker, Hasford was a combat correspondent. I don't remember whether it was Band of Brothers where you mentioned a drill sergeant or referred to Schwimmer in BoB as drill sergeant, but I was thinking, obviously, he hasn't seen FMJ yet xD (but didn't want to comment and spoil FMJ). You've probably heard by now that R. Lee Ermey was a drill sergeant in real life and was only supposed to be a technical advisor on FMJ, but he was so good that Kubrick not only gave him the role but also let him improvise/write his own lines! Apparently Ermey also had to explain to Kubrick the meaning of a "reach-around" xD (which I thought was fairly obvious from the context...) Anyway, you'd think that the many times I've seen this movie, I'd get less affected, but the older I get/the more times I watch it, the more difficult I find it to stomach the scenes with Leonard (amazing acting by D'Onofrio). They never used to make me cry, but now I can hardly watch them.

FMJ was filmed in England! In London even, I believe. At an abandoned gas plant or so. Kubrick did not like flying.
