S.L.A. Marshall wrote an article claiming that according to his studies American rifle companies in WW2 only had 15 to 20%of their men engaging the enemy in a firefight. There is little support for his position in other sources so it is still being argued but most experts do not accept those figures as accurate.

According to the Geneva Convention (first adopted in 1864), knowingly firing at a medic wearing clear insignia is a war crime. Most European and South American countries, Canada, Australia, and a few African countries are parties to all Geneva Conventions and Protocols. The US is party to all Geneva Conventions but only Protocols III. Obviously that doesn't mean that every single person will adhere to it in actual battle.
