Apologies for the camera issues, but this is just an AWESOME movie, and I had such a fun time watching with Domi (her first time!!).  This movie has pretty much everything you could ask for: action, philosophy, special effects, great characters, killer costumes... and our discussion at the end got pretty deep, and really made me think.  Definitely recommend!

First of all I am not looking forward to the new Matrix at all…from the trailer it already feels like it’s lost it’s ambience. I’ll probably watch it but I don’t have high hopes. As for this film, you guys are right, this film is incredibly deep and complex & you could talk for hours about it for sure. There was a time I thought about themes in relation to religion since it does make some Biblical references. Another time I saw “the matrix” as the programming within our society to make us believe the world works a certain way and to influence us/ distract us from thinking for ourselves. I still believe this and I personally do view our society through this lens. Regarding free will 😳 - Well I can see why it would seem that the Oracle scene is deterministic but I’m not sure. The Oracle knowing ones decision in advance doesn’t take away the will of the person. The Oracle sharing her foresight influences those around her, that’s true. Trinity could very well believe in Neo and fall for him because of the prophecy but if that were the case then she would be falling into another “matrix” so to speak (the matrix being any programming or illusion that we don’t have free will). Personally, there is some comfort in believing in destiny and fate but because it kind of aligns with determinism I don’t really believe in it. It just doesn’t make sense to me why we would be put on this earth with a brain to even discuss such things if we were all here to play out some predetermined script. It’s why I personally don’t like looking into prophecies or horoscopes because it does muddy your intuition and influences you to follow a mapped out path and essentially restrict your will. For me, the message of the film is trying to tell us through Neo that there is free will, that we are not passive and that the matrix can be overcome because of it. But it requires self belief and to “know thy self” and to rise above control, influence including prophecy. So I believe we are all Neo. The problem is we have the same obstacles as the film in that a lot of us don’t realise or believe we have access to a higher consciousness because we trust the matrix (government, professionals, religion, media etc) more than we do ourselves. And free will cannot be truly expressed either if you aren’t aware of all your options (that the red pill exists) which I do believe is the goal even our world, and why the film has a theme of “dream states” and “sleeping.” Anyway great discussion :)

Makes you wonder if Buffy isn't just some program the machines created to destroy viruses (vampires and demons) within the matrix. Or even more, the creatures we see on the show are really members of the resistance from Zion "feeding" on us and setting us free, and the machines are making us in the matrix see them as evil. Please tell me we're going through the entire trilogy leading up to Resurrections.
