Spike is spot-on about schools being factories. Originally, schools were only made because of industrial revolution - factories needed more workforce. But most working class people didn't know how to read,write and do simple math. So it's cheaper to make it mandatory to send every kid in a country to a school and by the age of 14 or 18 they're ready to work for Ford/Amazon/Siemens....

One fun little tidbit on this episode. When they give Giles the little finger puppet monster and Tara goes “Grrrr Arrrgh” That is a direct copy/homage of the Mutant Enemy logo for Joss Whedons production company. It’s at the end of credits of every episode. Check it out.
