Wesley is acting like a Watcher. He has combat and battle strategy training. Giles made a similar decision in the finale of s5 of Buffy to sacrifice Ben...although he was saving the world and not just some friends. But he is acting in line with what he was taught for better or worse. Ends justify the means with them usually.
