the 'fake' pic isn't this at all, there is one other. the famous pic was a practice shot of the 2nd flag going up, lowry then took a clearly posed one of the marines around the flag with their weapons at the ready, he was then wounded and his film was sent on. recovering in the hospital people asked him about his wonderful imagery and asked if it was posed. 'of course' he said honestly thinking people were talking about the set piece and not understanding it was his practice shot that had captured the imagination. The second flag going up photo wasn't a practice shot. Take a look at the in-color YouTube movie of the flag going up and you can see the exact spot that Rosenthall took it. Also, Staff Sergeant Lou Lowery wasn't on the mountain when Rosenthall took both the 2nd flag going up and the posed Gung Ho group photo. That one was taken by Rosenthall and it was he who had said yes to the posed question, for the reason you stated. Lowery had taken all of the pictures of the initial flag raising and as a fire fight broke out after it went up he broke his camera hitting the deck. As he was descending the hill to get another he ran into Rosenthall and movie photographer Sergeant Bill Genaust (the one who took the color film of the 2nd flag going up) coming up and said them that they missed the flag raising but that the view from up there was great. So neither of those two ascending photographers had any idea about what was coming. Genaust, BTW, never made it off of the island.
