Week 276 - Can the Americans Stop the Kamikazes? - WW2 - December 9, 1944

This is a very busy week of the war. In the west, the Americans manage to reach the Roer River in force, but haven't taken any of its dams; in Italy, the Allies liberate Ravenna; the Soviet advance in Hungary continues, and the Soviets even set up a new Hungarian government; martial law is declared in Greece; the Japanese make a corridor to Indochina; the fighting on Leyte continues, and the kamikaze menace becomes ever more worrisome. 00:00 INTRO 01:10 British intelligences failure 01:55 Allies reach the Roer River 05:35 Problems with Devers’ 6th Army Group 07:41 Allies liberate Ravenna 08:50 Soviet advances in Hungary 12:10 Soviets set up a new Hungarian government 13:47 A deadly demonstration and martial law in Greece 18:33 Japanese establish a corridor to Indochina 19:59 Leyte and kamikaze attacks 23:45 CONCLUSION Join us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TimeGhostHistory Or join the TimeGhost Army directly at: https://timeghost.tv/signup/ Check out our TimeGhost History YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/timeghost Between 2 Wars: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrG5J-K5AYAU1R-HeWSfY2D1jy_sEssNG Follow WW2 Day by Day on Instagram: @ww2_day_by_day Follow TimeGhost History on Instagram: @timeghosthistory Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeGhostHistory/ Hosted by: Indy Neidell Director: Astrid Deinhard Producers: Astrid Deinhard and Spartacus Olsson Executive Producers: Astrid Deinhard, Indy Neidell, Spartacus Olsson Creative Producer: Marek Kamiński Community Management: Ian Sowden Written by: Indy Neidell Research by: Indy Neidell Map animations by: Daniel Weiss Map research by: Sietse Kenter Edited by: Iryna Dulka Artwork and color grading by: Mikołaj Uchman Sound design by: Marek Kamiński Colorizations by: Mikołaj Uchman Daniel Weiss Adrien Fillon - https://www.instagram.com/adrien.colorisation Source literature list: http://bit.ly/WW2sources Archive footage: Screenocean/Reuters - https://www.screenocean.com Image sources: IWM FRE 11098 FORTEPAN / Pálfi András Dmitri Kessel National Portrait Gallery Soundtracks from Epidemic Sound: Easy Target - Rannar Sillard Darkness Closing In - Max Anson Run and Hide - Philip Ayers Secret Cargo - Craft Case At the Front - Phoenix Tail It's Not a Game - Philip Ayers Dark Beginning - Johan Hynynen Leave It All Here - Fabien Tell Duels - Farrell Wooten Wicked Games - Philip Ayers Dragon King - Jo Wandrini Rivers Run Red - Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen Rush of Blood - Reynard Seidel The Twelve Spies - Silver Maple A TimeGhost chronological documentary produced by OnLion Entertainment GmbH.

Why no "Dambuster" bombs for the Roer dams?

I really miss when you guys used to post the early episode on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the week leading up to the video's normal release day on Saturday. I loved checking out this Patreon during my lunch break and getting the awesome surprise of seeing the weekly video out early and watching it while I ate. I'm guessing this week will have talk about the US creating the 5-star rank? It would be a great time to finally talk about William Leahy, FDR's Chief of Staff. He was the first man to be given the US 5-star rank and I don't recall him even being mentioned in any of the videos on your channel yet. Leahy is one of the most forgotten people of WW2 and really one of the 5 most important people in the whole war in the opinion of most people who have studied Leahy. FDR really knew nothing about war. All the decisions FDR made on the war really came from Leahy and what he thought the US should do or push their Allies to do. Leahy was FDR's top advisor once the war started and had the biggest effect on the US's war effort and what decisions the US made. With George Marshall and Henry Stimson being just below him in the decision-making roles. This is why Leahy was the first US officer given the 5-star rank making him technically a higher rank than George Marshall. Since seniority is the tiebreaker for officers of an equal rank when determining who has the higher rank. Which is why MacArthur is also technically higher ranked than Eisenhower.
