Week 232 - Leningrad: NO STEP BACK! - February 4, 1944

The Allies begin a new operation in the Pacific this week: assaulting the Marshall Islands. They also make big attacks from their beachhead in Italy at Anzio, but these are called off after only a few days in the face of heavy enemy resistance. However, in the USSR there's several successes against the Axis, as they are pushed back both in the far north and the far south of the front, and still surrounded near Korsun. Every time I watch these siege videos I look at my live 50mm Russian mortar and think about how many were used in desperate flights (although mine was a Finnish Winter War capture)

OK, so where is our Burma coverage? The northern offensive is starting and the Japanese are moving towards the Indian border. Also, ichigo prep is starting.

Random thought, am I the only one who thinks that the Anzio landings are kinda playing out how Haigs planned Belgian landings would have in 1917 had the thrusts forward reached their intended threshold to initiate the landings?

My uncle, Pvt. Ray Stambaugh, 142 Infantry, 36th Division, was killed in Italy on February 2, 1944. I was born April 22nd, 1941, so I do not remember Ray, but have often visited his grave in Altoona, pa. From what I can find in Wikipedia, given the date of Ray's death and the history of the war at that time, I assume he must have been killed at Rohrweiler. Does anyone out there have any more info on the 142nd at that time?

"Even big bombs wouldn't make the Japanese surrender." Big bombs didn't. Wiping out another couple of cities when so very many had already been reduced to ash wasn't the deciding factor. Russia declaring war and preparing to invade and seize Hokkaido was the final straw, since the Japanese had no means of defending against that, because all their troops were in the south, preparing to resist the Americans.

Indeed; it would be a shame if the 'forgotten army' did not get its due. The Burma campaign is notable for so many reasons and merits in-depth treatment.

The Soviet seizure of Manchuria was the last straw, but they couldn't have taken hokkaido. They didn't have the sea lift capability or experience.

we were sending the Russians landing craft in preparation for their attempt... btw they never returned oR PAID FOR THEM .....AS WITH MOST OF THEIR LEND LEASE EQUIPMENT....

Saw your post regarding the expenses and income and your appeal for raising funds for your future projects.

I would love to contribute to your endeavours but I am not happy that you are not doing similar projects on Bagration. D day is more or less known to anyone who has some interest in WW2, but I am sure most (including me) are not aware of the intricacies of Bagration. I would certainly contribute if the coverage was for Bagration instead of D day.

Operation Bagration took place between June 22 and August 19, 1944. It would be extremely hard to make a similar specials for Bagration than D-day. I personally feel like Indy can cover what happen in the weekly episodes.

I also hope they don't forget about this campaign but the operation does not start for another couple weeks yet. So, hopefully Indy will give us an update soon.

??? The battle of the admin box and the Chinese offensive into the hukawng valley have both already started

Thank you for your effort. I subscribed to contribute

Then they could have prioritised Bagration rather than D day. Is it a possible bias against one allied army. Again if they are so eager on western front, will they have the audacity to show Market Garden in its full glory and gory. THEY WON'T. So kindly accept that the team of Indy are nothing but a bunch of cheap publicity seekers. It's a shame that sensible people around the world can be fooled by the words of such crooks

I am an avid follower of your programs. For some years. I have learnt a lot. I am an Historian and teach Holocaust and WW2.

Bagration, Ichi Go and Overlord are the three operations in 1944 that determined how the war was going to end. Only one them took place over the span of a single day. The others were multi month complex campaigns that I am sure we will get updates on in the normal week by week coverage (9 for Bagration and something like 32 for Ichigo)

Had to get on board with the team after so much amazing content !
