207 - Manstein Goes Great War Style - WW2 - August 13, 1943

From Sicily to Spas-Demensk, the Axis continue conceding ground to the Allies this week. But the fighting is still tough. The Wehrmacht has halted the Red Army offensive in the Kuban, and the British and American Armies have neither the strength nor the willpower to press the advantage against Axis troops retreating to the Italian mainland. If Albert Speer has a problem with the way Hitler is conducting the war he should talk to Hitler about it because he is one of Hitlers main advisors. Hitler can make orders and say whatever he wants. However, if his advisors can't change his mind or just follow his orders anyway. It's not Hitler's fault. German High Command seems content with following whatever Hitler says and don't really understand the gravity of their situation. They don't seem to care that if they lose the war they'll all be killed and hated for all of history. They all seem content to let Hitler do whatever he wants and then die with him.

I must take exception of this observation, Andy. If Spear thought for a moment that Hitler would have listened to his opinion on military strategy, he would have spoken up. As it was, however, Spear was not a military officer, thus to Hitler, he would have been getting out of his lane of expertise (even though, he could hardly been worse at strategic thinking than Hitler!). Also, there were many instances where Hitler's generals tried to avoid carrying out his orders, and some were relieved of command because of it.

This post is as good as any to say something about the maps: They are amazing! I've said that before and they've only gotten better since. However: I'd honestly be perfectly fine if you dialed the map quality down from eleven to, say nine, if it meant that the map-makers get a bit of a break from what for quite some time now sounds like a weekly crunch. (On a semi-related note: I'm honestly not even sure what all the symbols on the maps mean or how their positions correspond to actual frontline soldiers.)

I disagree. Because of the crimes against humanity german high command have done has left themselves no outs. They will be executed if they lose this war. They have to know this. They are intelligent enough to know that. They just don't care.

Great episode as usual guys. That foreshadowing though…

wasn't Hitler basically a junkie at this point? Seems to me a little unfair to compare Hitler's abilities and traits before and now without mentioning the drugs.

At the Quebec Conference Churchill was bullied into accepting the Morgenthau plan for the dismemberment of Germany, which leaked to the press and gave lethal inspiration to Germany for one last push. Some historians feel that the war would have ended earlier than it did. I wonder if Indy will cover that.

O D

This brings to mind the excuse that Germany and Japan fought on because the Allies demanded Unconditional Surrender... forgetting that Germany and Japan did the same when they were winning. Churchill and Roosevelt were never going to let any Nazi Government stay in power. It's hard for me to believe that any German General or Politician could seriously believe they would be allowed to keep their positions because the Allies would be forced to sign an armistice . .. well I guess out of arrogance . Surely a General could compare his mostly foot army that needs draft horses with 2 nations' armies that are heavily mechanized and are supported by a nation that can out mass produce them ....Losers always find excuses.I can't find much sympathy for these two brutal nations . Sorry.

And what reactions Speer could have expected from Hitler even if he had expressed himself. Hitler didn't understand the nuisances of economics of war. Had he understood it, he would not have declared war on USA. BESIDES there was gestapo and Roland Frietzler for who ever tried to contradict Hitler's dictat.

But we tend to forget the basic principles adopted by victorious Allies after the war. GRAB everything and everyone who could influence during cold war. Spree was already recognise as such person with ability for big factories and organisations skills. I hope he could have been employed by the victorious Allies
