206 - Allied Tidal Wave in Romania - WW2 - August 6, 1943

The Allies bomb the Romanian oil fields, a major Axis source of oil, but it does not go well for the attackers. They do advance in both Sicily and the Solomon Islands- where a future President has one heck of an adventure, and in the USSR a huge Soviet counter offensive begins, taking Belgorod after just a few days and threatening Kharkov. Well JFK on the thumbnail. I think we know what this might be referring to... the adventures of PT-109!

I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood you at 18:15 where you said I could learn more on the Instagram day-by-day coverage or the YouTube Community tab. But it was really cool you had a screen-shot of the last ever post from 5 weeks earlier.

Another great episode. Keep in mind that as heroic the Soviets are, they would probably not be nearly as successful without lend lease, which the Russians barely paid lip service to.

Wow, the tide is turning. I was surpised in the past that the Japanese left Attu by themselves. Then again the Aleutians have horrible weather most of the time, Flights get cancelled in July regularly and my trip to Dutch Harbor on the Alaska Marine Highway had a lot of Sea turbulence. (But it is great fun and beautiful, there are some WW2 sites there as wee).

Let's look at some figures: the U.S. provided roughly 4000 Sherman tanks to the Russians under the lend-lease. The Soviets built roughly 80,000 T-34's by the end of the war. Obviously the lend-lease helped the Soviet war effort, and indeed, Russia only finished paying off that debt to the U.S in this century, which certainly constitutes more than lip service.

Randall Norman Pick

Trucks, radios, food, apparently 15 million pairs of army boots Russia was able to focus industrially on direct weaponry.

Stéphane Adam

It was less the tanks and more the aviation fuel and raw equipment. No taking away from Russia's bloody-minded accomplishments at all, it's just that glossing over that kind of boring historical detail leads to taking the wrong lessons.

I was thinking this as well. Havent seen a post in a while.

Correct. They also don’t appreciate that USA opened front in North Africa same time as Stalingrad; and landed in Sicily same time as Kursk. Both times German resources were significantly weakened in USSR

FWIW I prefer this recruiting add for the Time Ghost Army to the More Smoke one. Cheers for now and Keep'em Rolling !

Please also remember then that the USA did not do it alone! Britain and the Empire countries were fighting Germany and Italy in North Africa for a long, long time before the USA showed up! The USA also did not invade Sicily or Italy or even Normandy on their own, no matter what the Hollywood movies say.

if you're interested in the coast watchers, read "Lonely Vigil" by Walter Lord.

Rejoined the time ghost army just to say that it is odd to see Poland in background but no Republic of China.

Alternatively we could note that the Soviets themselves stated that Lend-Lease was crucial for winning the war, which in retrospect is probably saying slightly too much since they had already put the Germans on the defensive by the time Lend-Lease materiel reached USSR in any volume more than a trickle.

Lend Lease started coming almost immediately after Barbarossa. The Soviets wouldn't have even been able to save themselves outside Moscow in 1941.

Anonymous

Lend-Lease was sent to USSR beginning in 1941, but before 1943 volumes were so small as to be close to insignificant compared to Soviet production. At the end of 1942, for instance, only about 5% of vehicles in use in USSR were of foreign manufacture. There were two main limiting factors: all the routes that were ultimately in use weren't established at the beginning; and production capacity in the west was still being built up, and initially had problems even supplying the production countries themselves.
