This week at TimeGhost, we put out a video in partnership with the game War Thunder. You have probably noticed that sponsors are very few and far between on this channel, and that's because we've built it from the ground up as a community project which relies on you, the TimeGhost Army, and not on sponsors. We also want to make any integration as smooth as possible so as to not dilute the quality of the final video. We would be interested in how you feel about these. They do allow us to make more content, but you contribute the vast majority of TimeGhost resources and will always be priority #1.

183 - The Blitzkrieg is Back - WW2 - February 26 1943

Erich von Manstein's Axis counterattack on the Eastern Front begins this week and right away smashes through the Red Army lines, threatening all the recent Soviet gains. The Allies- the Americans- also suffer a big defeat in Tunisia at the Kasserine Pass, though in the Pacific it is the Americans who occupy the Russell Islands. I'm more a DCS guy but I'm also a pilot. Thus War Thunder seems a bit weak to me. I also developed the first MMO, Air Warrior - a WWII air combat sim - back in the '90s and prefer upfront billing rather than Gacha-like monetizing schemes. DCS is smaller scale, certainly, but with higher fidelity. Here's a video of an air battle in DCS uploaded by a player this morning. https://youtu.be/qLwRf4K3eS0 Great video here too, btw 😂

I don't see anything wrong with it. I doubt anyone wants to sponsor the really hard hitting stuff, but it's always nice to have extra video to listen to at work.

I don't mind sponsors as long as they are not intrusive and relevant to the video at hand. After all, if it can help create more videos in the long run, I guess that's a win-win I suppose.

The sponsorship in the Mosquito video did not seem obtrusitve to me. I think it's because the topic of the video concerns military vehicles specifically. Sponsorship would feel really out of place in weekly episodes, WAH episodes or biography specials. But when it's war-themed video games sponsoring videos that relate to war-themed armour, weapons and vehicles, it's fine by me. Also, you incorporated the in-game footage into the video in a fitting way - I assume the footage is historically accurate (I was wondering about those horseshoe flying formations in the Pearl Harbor specials, actually), so it benefits the video. I have no issue with it whatsoever. Keep up the great work!

If you guys can get quality, relevant sponsors, I think most of us wish you well - make off like bandits (let Astrid handle the bandit bit boys...)! You've all earned it, but it is a fine line to tread, as you point out. Personally, I DO think that there was one problem, however. You guys have enough clout to pretty much set some broad guidelines for WT, Nicholas etc. My take is that the sponsorship message at the end was too long & felt 'tacked on' to an existing script. That's pretty typical sponsorship delivery on YT, so I don't think it's good enough for TG. I'd prefer the sponsors get their fair return in smaller, more well integrated packets rather than one long spiel. Eg Use WT to illustrate a point, then refer to the feature/benefit of the sponsor in how it helped you make that point. Sponsorships _can_ blow you up, so just be like a StuG - a small, tough to hit target for haters. YT is [cough] pretty harsh, even for StuGs. I'm sure you guys are already 5 steps ahead of my thinking so I'll shut up now. I trust your judgement to be better than mine. Greetings from a cloudy Canberra everyone! PS When will there be a WW2 Loot Crate? 😉

I'm fine with sponsors as long as they are accurate for history. I'm glad we are still the priority but take the sponsorships because more money means more videos and good quality. I also like the footage from the game in the videos.

What will become quickly apparent in Tunisia and we have already seen for some time in the Soviet Union, is that the Germans cannot maintain any sustained military action before running out of steam. I know it is easy in hindsight, German defeat is now inevitable, it is simply a matter of how long.

Since you don't seem to want to address the case of Lloyd Fredendall, I will.

Anonymous

George Marshall, US Army Chief of Staff, described Fredendall as "one of the best" and Eisenhower soon joined the party, "I bless the day you urged Fredendall upon me and cheerfully acknowledge that my earlier doubts were unfounded". By February 1943, his reputation was in tatters. The situation at the front was in a parlous state, so Eisenhower sent Mj Gen Harmon to be his assistant. Fredendall handed Harmon a note, authorizing him to take charge and then went to bed. Harmon stabilized the front and upon his return to Eisenhower told him that Fredendall was no damn good and should be replaced. He later described him as a physical and moral coward to Patton, who of course replaced Fredendall. To keep morale at home high (I read) Fredendall received a hero's welcome and a third star. In my opinion, this is a typical case of the big wigs covering their backsides when they make an appointment that turns out to be horribly wrong.

The inability for the Axis to be unified doesn’t merely apply to the German high command, but to all their fighting forces including Italy and Japan. In the end the Allies even manage to keep Stalin on board.

I hope the team really can turn that particular challenge into an opportunity! A company that wants instant cred points,

I am torn here, While I would like you guys get more sponsorship, and probably hire more crew, and ease up a little bit, I am concerned how the community will react to sponsorship ad on weekly episodes. I am sure you will not consider it for WAH, but the question here is it appropriate to have them on weekly episodes, I personally dont mind, but I don't want you guys to get lot of hate from this. I would says start out with every video other than weekly ones and WAH. Like every specials like, Spies and ties, home front, Bio special and so on. Gauge the community reaction before proceeding.

Yeah DCS is awesome but the learning curve is pretty high for non-pilots. The free TF-51 (2 seater) has a really good model. I personally used to train on the L-39 and Mig 15 before taking lessons on the real ones in Santa Fe (yep reasonably priced instruction there). War Thunder and World of planes are more like forget the checklists and torque and just jump it :-). By the way I took a flight lesson on an electric Velis and these are REALLY easy to fly from an engine management perspective. Battery on/Avionics on and see if there are errors in the self diagnose. No carb heat issues etc. So these would make a nice sim plane. The only thing is the short range. <1 hour. Have fun in DCS, we might meet there some day:-)

Yes, Marc, with the Mig its range is SO short you have to declare a fuel emergency on takeoff 😂 🤣 But this one local guy in Charlottesville VA where I was based long ago loved his bright red Mig more than....uh...best I not use the analogy I was thinking of. What I loved about making sims in their heyday, back when the only large-scale online multiplayer games were WWII air combat sims, was that many veterans of that air war were still with us and willing to speak at our annual conferences. Most of our players loved history and hung on every word when these guys spoke. The players understood the serious and often tragic subtext underlying their gaming activity and wanted to be reminded of it. DCS is very small scale compared to that and, as you might suspect if you watch that YT video I posted a link to with Dutch, German, and Swiss players speaking German during that mission, most DCS WWII players are European. Nobody is refighting WWII. There's no nationalism involved certainly but it's fun when you're flying Spitfires or Mosquitos and the folks on comms have British accents 😉
