This week Operation Edelweiss begins with a blast and the Wehrmacht closes in on Stalingrad. As a result, Stalin issues the famous order "not a step back" for fear that the Soviet armed forces are collapsing. Further East, Japan has landed on New Guinea with good success, and the Allies attempt to launch an offensive in North Africa.

I was expecting this title this week and man, I was not disappointed at all.

'not a step back' philosophy was why there were so many disastrous encirclements like at Kiev.

I wonder had the Germans had not divided between Armies A and B and continued to the Caucasus in mass whether they would have had a better chance of reaching their destination.

Patriotic language aside, the Soviets are not in any way sticking with the strategies of 1941. Stavka will issue orders for withdrawals.

Once you get to restov where are they gonna keep bailing to the Urals?

Logistics would have been even more of an issue in that scenario.

Looking forward to seeing how Stalingrad turns out. Also Guadalcanal.

The irony of this title is that whilst the Soviets were attempting to defend in place, the Australians undertook a fighting retreat against a Japanese opponent. The similarity is that the Japanese are soon to have supply issues akin to those currently besetting the Germans, if not more so. Look forward to hearing more of the exploits of the Chocco Soldiers.

Questions I have for Out of the Foxholes are: 1. How much participation was there in Fau Blau from Croatia, Slovakia, and other Axis client/puppet states? 2. Why hasn't Bulgaria sent support like Italy, Hungary, or Romania?

Anonymous

So, are you saying there was no way of achieving their objective in the Caucasus?

Anonymous

If they had captured the Black Sea ports they might have been able to sort out their logistics. They got tunnel vision on Stalingrad and kept pouring forces into the city instead of trying to isolate it.

Anonymous

Yes, they should not have concentrated on entering the city in mass and allowing themselves to be surrounded.

1. 100th Jaeger division at 6th army has a Croatian brigade 2. Bulgaria isn't at war with the USSR.

Indy & team, question! When advancing, how did the various armies fighting in the war know where the enemy was and how did they plan their advances? Was it reactionary, or did they send out forward scouts and attack based on that delayed information? Also interested with how this interacted with command structure - I can see how this would exacerbate problems with, say, the british and make the germans much more effective (with their local, flexible leadership style). -Copernicus Crane, USA
