This season we take a look at the rising prominence of superstition and spiritualism in the Western world. As is our mission with Between Two Wars Zeitgeist, we have been able to find an individual who embodied the feeling of the era: Arthur Conan Doyle. His speeches on spiritualism, the super natural world, and life after death, gain a huge following in a world still very dominated by the spiritual institution that is the Church. History isn't made by "great men" or in this case simply influential men such as Doyle, but there are certainly figures and events in history which give us a perfect birds eye view of the historical moment.

This interpretation of history doesn't always make for dramatic or easy to follow content, which is why you rarely see it on the History Channel. None the less it is an important one, so thank you for all your support here on Patreon, without which we couldn't approach history from this angle.

Being the creator of the legendary Sherlock Holmes has made Arthur Conan Doyle famous for his scientific rationality. But Doyle also has a deeply held belief in the existence of the spirit universe. In a world still reeling from the shock of the Great War, he is not alone. O D

One might say superstition is someone else's gods or beliefs.

Once again, a brilliant narrative. Bringing disparate ideas of the era into a concise summary is not easy. Must have been difficult trying to decide what to mention and what to leave out. Hard enough when considering a specific country and a bitch when considering it globally. Great work.

I was expecting some mention of Aleister Crowley, a famous occultist who was also rumored to have worked for British intelligence a number of times.
