This week, Sparty delves into the area bombing of Cologne, which leaves hundreds of civilians dead and thousands homeless. The raid does destroy some industrial targets, at least for the time being, but many in the British war effort question the efficacy of this strategy.

Germany must certainly be stopped however, as this week sees another escalation of the mass murder of Jewish people across German dominated Europe. Many more Jews across the continent begin to be forced to wear a yellow star to differentiate them, taking them another step further in the process of genocide. Already, thousands are being sent east to murder camps, which are already killing at their full capacity.

One of the architects of this horror, Reinhard Heydrich, is attacked in a daring ambush by Czech resistors under the direction of the Czech government in exile. They severely wound him. Many in the Czech resistance warn of brutal Nazi retaliation, but the plan went on regardless.

This all raises an important question. Why did people continue to resist, even when doing so could result in further suffering at the hands of the occupiers? Across occupied territory, partisans in occupied Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechia, and many more areas, all continue to fight despite the guarantee of reprisals against civilians. When facing such a horrific regime, why do we resist at all costs? Sparty has given us part of his answer, what's yours?

As always, thank you for your support. In this series more than any the importance of our work is most clear to us here at the TimeGhost Team. Without you, it would be literally impossible.

The Nazis took their anger out on Lidice (amongst other outrages) after Heydrich's death. I hope Sparty is ok, the really grim tale that is War Against Humanity gets seriously depressing from now on.

I suspect that at least some of the British wanted Heydrich gone as he was investigating Canaris' Abwehr that had worked with the British against Hitler.

I confess that I can't really believe that any of the Allies thought Retaliation would not be significant.

I'm Jewish. Why fight at all costs? The choice is to die as a man or live (a bit longer) on your knees. .... I wonder what I would have done under that set of circumstances. FREEEEEDOMMMMM!

Heydrich needed killing that is for sure. I can’t imagine being in the Czech’s position, but damn they were some badasses!

Again I commend you on getting the story right and balanced, also reporting on the bombing of German civilians. This episode particularly, I would like to recommend a Novel by the French writer Laurent Binet: HHhH, telling the story of Heydrich and the assassination. It is a wonderful book and it really takes you back into time: a mustread! (I have the Dutch version: HhhH, ISBN 978 90 290 8651/NUR 302

Captivating . . .

Captivating .Is it too early (?) to start thinking about the initiation of the run up / preparation for D-Day?

Probably a little early in my opinion. First we got the Dieppe Raid to cover first...

I've always been struck by the similarities between Reinhard Heydrich and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Both were brought up in priveledged homes, with educated, secular parents and rarefied private educations that centered on music. But the two men could not have reached more different moral outlooks.

As we speak of war against humanity, it would be worth mentioning the horrific price the czech civilians had to pay after Heydrich's death...

Yes Jean, I fully agree and I'm sure we will hear all about the tragedy of Liedice and all the other atrocities in the next episode. Again this wonderful team will provide to those who may not have heard of these horrors the best Sheild we have against hate, ie education. If this evil man had to die, it is probably more of a comfort to the victims of the holocaust that he suffered his share of pain.

Thanks for telling the story that must never be forgotten. I can not tell you how much I appreciated this telling, my children (adults now) have been watching these and are in many cases learning of the full extent of these horrific events and tragedy to simple people who had no real sin other then being from the wrong family in the wrong place at the wrong time. As for Harris and the bombing of cities and again people in the wrong place at the wrong time I hope he at some point in in life realized how wrong and unforgivable these acts are. As for the resistance groups, I am sure I would have been right there, once you prove you are going to kill innocent people you are my enemy.
