This week, Sparty delves into the area bombing of Cologne, which leaves hundreds of civilians dead and thousands homeless. The raid does destroy some industrial targets, at least for the time being, but many in the British war effort question the efficacy of this strategy.
Germany must certainly be stopped however, as this week sees another escalation of the mass murder of Jewish people across German dominated Europe. Many more Jews across the continent begin to be forced to wear a yellow star to differentiate them, taking them another step further in the process of genocide. Already, thousands are being sent east to murder camps, which are already killing at their full capacity.
One of the architects of this horror, Reinhard Heydrich, is attacked in a daring ambush by Czech resistors under the direction of the Czech government in exile. They severely wound him. Many in the Czech resistance warn of brutal Nazi retaliation, but the plan went on regardless.
This all raises an important question. Why did people continue to resist, even when doing so could result in further suffering at the hands of the occupiers? Across occupied territory, partisans in occupied Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, Poland, Czechia, and many more areas, all continue to fight despite the guarantee of reprisals against civilians.
