A few months ago we asked you to vote on the next TimeGhost History series. The result of that is finally here, with the first episode of the Indonesian War of Independence series. Now, we originally set out to make five episodes, one for each of the years from 1945 to 1949. We quickly noticed that there is a lot of context to colonialism and Dutch rule over the East Indies that we wanted to include. Therefore, we added one prologue that goes up to when the Japanese take over in 1942.

Thank you all very much for supporting us! It's thanks to you all that we're able to make yet another series. We absolutely loved working on this one, as it is one of the many crucial events of recent history that doesn't get nearly as much attention as it should, and is still today often misunderstood or abused.

I look forward to reading your comments!

Cheers,
Joram

The Bloody Dutch Colonialism | Indonesian War Of Independence I Prologue

This is the prologue to our five-part Indonesian War of Independence Miniseries. It sets the stage of brutal colonial repression, a growing sense of Indonesian Nationalism and ultimately the desire to be free. I didn't realize this either

Very well presented and it is one of the most forgotten wars fought post World War 2, over shadowed by events in Korea, China, IndoChina and Africa.

"Remaining European colonial powers, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands" - how about Portugal, with Mozambique and Angola? War in those countries and its connections with neighbouring South Africa and Rhodesia would make quite a series.

A very dear friend of mine was born in Indonesia. He was raised as a member of the upper crust of colonial society because his father was a military commander on Bali. In 1940, while attending the Dutch Military Academy in Holland, the Germans invaded. He joined the underground and fought the Nazis for the next five years. In 1942 his father fought the Japanese until his unit was captured. With their surrender, all Dutch resistance on the island ceased and he and his men were sent to Burma where they participated in the building of the Railroad of Death. Following the war, my friend was reunited with his father in Indonesia and then subsequently served in a special operations unit fighting against the Indonesian insurgents during their war for independence. Of course, there is more to his story, but I am very interested to see how your documentary dovetails with some of the stories he told me.

Hi Mikko! Thanks for the suggestion, that would be an interesting subject, for sure! I'll take it with me back to the team :) Maria, TimeGhost Team

Hi again William :) I seem to have got it a bit backwards today, since I answered your comment on the final episode first... I am amazed by all the things your friend got to experience, but also all the hardship he had to pull through - which he also did. What an incredible life story! Maria, TimeGhost Team

Nice to know. I have a special interest in the area, since I wrote my master's thesis about the economic sanctions against Rhodesia.
