In our first 1938 video we take a look at how appeasement policy enabled Hitler to push his expansionist agenda. It is an action-packed episode, as we cover not just appeasement, but also the Anschluss, the fate of of Czechoslovakia and the Rhineland. This episode, though far from the last Between Two Wars episode builds on the 'Good Hitler Years' myth episode in showing that an all-out war seems inevitable now. Right? Do you think that is the power of hindsight that allows us to treat the appeasement movement the way we do? Did they help Hitler? Or was it a fair attempt to keep Europe peaceful. Let us know in the YouTube comments!

Appeasement - How the West Helped Hitler Start WW2 | BETWEEN 2 WARS I 1938 Part 1 of 4

With the increasing aggression of Italy, Japan, and Germany in the 1930s, the League of Nations is becoming increasingly ineffective in regulating international disputes. Britain and France adopt a diplomatic strategy of appeasement to hold off all-out war and buy some crucial time. But will it work, and can Adolf Hitler's territorial ambitions be contained? Oh and two mentions of the Lizard King without a phone call from a certain Jim Morrison.

Impressive: fed the lizard king and grown him into a hydra...

Is there really evidence that the allies actually believed they were getting peace in 1938? They were already rearming but hardly ready for war. To have attacked Germany too early could have meant defeat. Given public opinion was still for avoiding war, as you said, democratic politicians had to say what people wanted to hear.

A detail : France and Britain were not totally on the same page on the Munich Agreements (again...) Daladier sure didn't want war but knew it was a fraud. However, he did not said it out loud because french opinion was for peace, and France had still economic, politic and social problems.

I'm sorry... but from personal experience, a bully will only be emboldened once you cower to his will. I've had to deal with it for most of my childhood, being a scrawny kid. And I got beaten a lot, and left without my "sandwich" on top of it. Well... once I started to fight back - yes, I did get beaten just as often, but I learned how to fight. I started to throw punches, as fast and as hard as I could, break lips, break noses, kick and bite and hit the sensible parts if the guy was too big and had no other choice. Not a pretty picture, true, but that was the reality of it. I decided that I will not get beaten without a fight - and I knew I would get beaten no matter what. So, in my mind, there was no choice really. Things went on for a while, up to the point where no bully would pick on me simply because I managed to build a kind of "crazy" reputation - they knew they would beat me, but nobody wanted to risk getting a bloody nose or a black eye from the scrawny kid - which happened every once in a while. And another lesson that I learned... throw your punch first whenever you're sure it's going to end in a fight. And you will feel it. Don't escalate, but be ready. Be aware of your surroundings, watch the body language of your "enemy", be mindful of your friends and his friends and so on. Use your brains as well, and don't ignore your instincts, don't ignore the signs. And when you've decided - don't wait, or you'll never get another chance. Remember, you're the smaller one. And who knows, maybe you'll just get on top of it after all. Of course, It's crazy, risky, and scary as hell. And you do need to train and learn how to fight, what are your weaknesses and what are your strengths. But overall I still believe to this day I made the right choice - especially considering other scrawny kids who went on to being bullied for all their childhood and even adolescence, and ended up with much deeper scars than the physical ones. So back to the Allies - be firm, move divisions to the border, use your intelligence apparatus, build a network of allies, threaten the economic interests of Germany and her friends etc. All of those might have worked - and if none would work, be ready to strike first and strike decisively. P.S. I am in no way advocating violence. It's always better to have all opponents walk away without any punch thrown. I abhor war, as it always leads to extreme suffering on the innocents. But left without a choice, the pain will only keep on coming should one decide to be passive about it.

Meanwhile in the USSR there's a chronic shortage of firemen needed to hose down the execution ramps under Lubyanka Prison. What an interesting and frightening time to have lived in Europe.

There is great evidence that at least Chamberlain believed that what he had done was to secure peace. At home folks like Halifax and Churchill doubted that very, very much though... so rearmament proceeded. In France it was the opposite with Daladier rather skeptic and apprehensive.

I was borrowing from the old saying (either ROman or Chinese): May you live in interesting times, May you come to the attention of those in authority, May you find what you are looking for.

Love the thumbnail picture of Hitler giving Chamberlain “rabbit ears.”
