Hitler, Goebbels and a team of dedicated Nazis used the 1936 Olympics to present a new Germany to the world. Grandiose, magnificent, organised and cultured. The Games led attention away from the racist and oppressive nature of the National-Socialist Ideology, and the world seemed to fall for it. It seems like Hitler was the true winner of the Berlin Olympics. Or was he?

Also, last week we held a poll about what series we should do when Between Two Wars is finished. Now that the results are in, I'm proud to present you the three series we'll make starting in April 2020. They will be about the 1946 Indonesian War of Independence, the 1956 Suez Crisis and about four decades of Troubles in Ireland. Which one we'll do first will be decided by everyone who supports us as TG ARMY SPECIALIST or higher (all pledges from $9 per month) – a new poll opened for them here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/33522113

Thanks to all of you for the supports and the input we have received so far. It's much appreciated!

Cheers,
Joram

How Hitler Won the Olympic Games - The Berlin Olympics | BETWEEN 2 WARS I 1936 Part 3 of 3

The Berlin Olympics in 1936 were a masterfully played piece of Nazi Propaganda, where they framed their race as physically superior and their ideology as modern, organised and cultured while also ostensibly downplaying their anti-internationalism racism and anti-semitism. But the Germans didn't embrace sports for friendly competition. They did so for something very different. Brilliant episode, fantastic

In high school in the early 1970s our class was shown a documentary film on the 1936 Olympics. In it the narrator claimed Hitler left the stadium everytime Jessie Owens won a gold medal. Was this mere propoganda or fact? Your documentary made no mention of it.

IIRC Jesse Owens even shook Hitlers hand according to his memoirs. Also Jesse Owens changed German racism on black people. "Running is all they're good for." is a rascist trope to this day.

A truly brilliant episode and even pushing that CC glass into our faces the whole time and then justifying it brilliantly at the very end. I loved it.

This article contradicts your claim. It indicates that both Hilter and (later) FDR snubbed Owens. https://www.britannica.com/story/was-jesse-owens-snubbed-by-adolf-hitler-at-the-berlin-olympics

Is that Captain Archibald Haddock from "The Adventures of Tintin" I see in your logo?

Quick note, Henri de Baillet-Latour's (7:45) birth date is wrong on his card, reading born 1976. Edit: Same with Hans at 8:52, 1987 - 1943

Didn't expect an episode about the Olympics. Well done, as always.

The picture is obviously fake, but read the article. It shows how muc hof a hassle this topic stirs up. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/jesse-owens-and-hitler-handshake/ All in all I find it very irrelevant if the racist #1 snubbed the prime black athlete in 1936. Because it does not change either the hatred of Hitler nor the achievements of Owens. But you know what survived both: Owens Olympiaoak. Every gold medal winner got a small "Olympia-Oak". There is an actual competitive dispute which 4 oaks were Owens oaks. The mentioned origin of the snub discussion, Cornelius Johnsons planted his oak in the garden of his parents house in L.A. and measures are taken to declare it a protected site of black history. And planting an oak doesn't make you a Nazi and it is maybe the only undisputed good thing the Nazis did: giving out trees to be planted.

Yes. We share a basic vocabulary and love for inventive insults. Otherwise no relation.

Minion

I'm only here for Indy's rants at the end. Just saying 😜

Thank you for your hard work on this series!

Say what you want, but Goebbels was pretty clever.
