This is the year that many inhabitants of Germany really started to notice the consequences of Hitlers power grab. In 1933 and 1934 you basically had two people. The ones that opposed Hitler actively and those who didn't. Hitlers Government, colleagues, Party, SS and SA effectively removed the first group from German public life in those life. Germany was no longer just Germany. Germany was turned into Nazi Germany.

With a series like Between Two Wars its hard to imagine any other outcome than World War Two, as all the episodes highlight historical events that were key in the years leading up to WW2. However, it can't hurt to reflect on History and imagine all the other versions of it we could have had. History was shaped by events and individuals. Things they did, how trivial they might have seemed at the time, impacted the course of things just as much as the things they ended up not doing. Just a thought I liked to share with you.

Cheers,

Joram

Thank you so much for closing with a quotation from G.K. Chesterton, which was like a gasp of fresh sanity after nearly choking on all that Nazi madness described in the episode. Chesterton wrote most of “Eugenics and other Evils” in 1910 and thought it would be unnecessary to publish it after Prussia was defeated in the Great War. But sadly had to finish and publish the work in 1922 as Prussia’s ideals for a scientifically-organized state astoundingly continued to flourish. You might have mentioned that the United States led the way with eugenically-inspired sterilization programs in the 1920’s. The Nazi’s ratcheted that despicable precedent to another level.
