Hey all! The war is yet again entering a new stage as the results of the Battle of France become apparent. Weeks like this make me realise how confusing and destabilising the war must have been for people at the time. Now that France was conquered by Germany, everything was possible. The status quo truly changed, and they didn't have the confidence that we - looking back today, have that the 'good' would be victorious over 'the evil'. On the other hand, the Germans must have been ecstatic. I could see how they thought that the sky was the limit and that they were untouchable. Anyway - interesting stuff. As always many thanks for your ongoing support!! We never forget that we're only doing this thanks to you all!

Cheers,

Joram

Do the Brits hate the French?! - WW2 - 045 - July 6 1940

The repercussions of the fall of France are not yet seen in full. But this week Britain makes it clear it isn't about to give up, even if it will mean some really hard decisions. Probably a bit unfair not to mention that Gensoul both acted in a rude manner toward Somerville and also failed to relay the full range of options given in the British ultimatum to the French government.

Extremely interesting to see all the diplomatic implications outside of Europe! That's exactly the type of content that sets this channel apart from other content and even history classes at school, which, understandably, focus mainly on the home country or maybe the rest of Europe at most.

Y'know I keep seeing the photo in the thumbnail. I always wondered if that's a famous person or a run of the mill Parisian. Has he been identified?

unless you're talking about the guy in the background... Is that Field Marshal Sir William Joseph "Bill" Slim? http://www.greatthoughtstreasury.com/author/william-slim-1st-viscount-slim-fully-field-marshal-sir-william-joseph-bill-slim

I think so, though I was on about our friend in the foreground. I found a blog post where someone dug up what he could: https://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspot.com/2012/10/who-was-frenchman-who-cried.html?m=1

We've got a lot of easter eggs today! Is that Nikita Khruchev as a Red Army Officer at 9:44 :)

Ah, the old switcheroo. This July 4th the Americans send shipments of arms to the English to assist in (partially) fucking up the French.

Great episode and thank You for all Your hard work. One correction. (10:55) Not all of Hitler victims surrendered. As a matter of fact Poland has not. Although it has fallen miserably. Warsaw has surrendered. All Polish territories felt in German or Soviet hands. However ridiculous,i t is a matter of ongoing and growing discussion in my country 80 years later. Whether there was any rationality in not accepting peace agreement any later than France did. Some authors claim that most of Nazi German atrocities, genocide of Polish nation, Warsaw uprising and even holocaust could be avoided. If only we accept Hitler terms however shameful and humiliating it could have been.

Poland did not fall miserably (talking as an outsider). Poland had no chance: USSR invaded alongside The Third Reich, the allies (mostly France) did not really honor the alliance (declaring war but not actually doing anything). And in the end, Poland was in the "winners" side (in theory) but in the "losers" side de facto (50 of Soviet dominance is by no means a gain). Frankly, imho, Poland put up more fight/resistance than the French did (not that I blame the French, they did what was best for their nation, at the time). Nevertheless, I wouldn't describe Poland's fall as "miserable".

Would it have been possible for the navy to mutiny from the French government and then run to England?

Anonymous

Thank You for very kind words. Even more pleasing to hear that from Romanian person. In Poland help and shelter that our soldiers and civilians found in Romania on the run from defeated Poland is well remembered. That said, perhaps I used wrong word but meant exactly what You wrote: paying so much effort (counted in millions of deaths) to be formally recognized as an Ally is much too much of a price.

Everything is possible but that clearly would be an act of treason against legal government, leaving families and putting them in risk, losing all belongings, not to mention broken careers. Also I guess french navy personel did not care too much about British empire, at least as long as they had their own overseas to care about.

That's one hell of a question to ponder, isn't it? As a Canadian I can't even begin to fathom what it's like... But I don't think surrendering sooner would have made a difference. Hitler wanted the Polish population gone.

Actually thats true in his final years. Arguably had Poland not accepted British guarantees he may have taken his rage elswhere. While Weimar Germany did all it could to strangle Polish Republic, including trade war, embargo and befriending Soviets (Rapallo) one of first Hitler moves was sign non-aggression treaty with Poland and quit cooperation with Soviets. Also had a lot of respect to late Marshall Pilsudski. The same Pilsudski who entered first world war on central powers side but turned against them in 1917. Heroism is good to read about but not too much of policy. When Your country is in the very middle of global conflict cold blooded calculation seems more useful to me.

At this point which French government has official control of its colonies? The one based in Vichy or the Free French government in exile based in London?
