Hey all!

I'm here to finally announce that the 43rd episode of our Weekly World War Two series is here! As I posted yesterday, there were some delays caused by some changes in the workflow as well as that this is edited by a new volunteer editor from the states, Daniel. I really think he did a great job, and he's a great addition to the team. Thanks to you all, we can keep growing (we hope we can afford to pay Daniel soon) and keep improving our production quality and output quantity.

I have one request for you all. Please share this with as many people as you think are interested (although i'm sure that many of you are already known as the person who can't shut up about history, as am I). Nevertheless, YouTube is letting us down in terms of recommendation (mostly because of demonetisation), so it's hard to reach new audiences. Spread the word and make us known to each and all!

Cheers,
Joram

Can you tell us anything about _why_ so many videos are demonetized?

TimeGhostHistory

We can Nico. It's best exemplified as a knee-jerk reaction to the shenanigans by Logan Paul and PewDiePie (although there were other and earlier cases as well, but these had the biggest effect). It really took off when PewDiePie (a preferred YouTube partner at the time) did his 'humorous' videos where he made light of the holocaust including sending out people with Nazi slogans on the streets of Jerusalem. This caught the attention of the press and it was uncovered that despite YouTube's continued assurances that ads only runs on 'safe' content, YouTube was monetizing some incredibly dubious political extremist content. A massive amount of ad buyers pulled their ads off YouTube. This was the beginning of the so called apocalypse. They tightened the bots, but they were still willing to turn on monetizing for responsible content like ours when we requested manual review. Then Logan Paul happened - you might have heard that he made a video in the so called Suicide Forest in Japan where he showed a corpse hanging from a tree, while he and his pals were cracking jokes. Now Logan has a very, very young audience, and YouTube faced another public backlash for having no control over the content on their platform. After many months of deliberating how to handle this they started gradually putting much more restrictive rules in place on content that deals with controversial political issues, shows acts of war, or displays graphic images of death. At this point they don't care of its responsible content that would run very well with ads on any television station in the world. Not only that, it's up to the actual individual that watches our content in manual review to decide how to interpret the rules, so that it's a total crap shoot if we get demonetized or not. In fact videos with almost identical content, same amount of violence, same amount of graphic death, similar thumbnail and title, will one week be monetized and then the next week it won't. As of the beginning of this year most of our videos do not pass the test anymore though, and we have gotten age restricted when viewers complained - which ironically seems to have happened because people with certain political beliefs have tried to get our content taken down, because it debunks their revisionism.

Wow, thanks for the detailed explanation! I had no idea. Also: Holy crap, what the hell is going on with Youtube outside of my bubble.

Wow... Now, I could personally help by raising my contribution a bit, but the next tier is simply too much for me. How about introducing some 30 / 40 / 50$ tiers? Maybe some of us would increase their contributions from the 25$ tier. May not be much, but every little helps.

TimeGhostHistory

You can set the monthly rate independent of the tiers, but we have heard you and we will revise the tiers. Thank you for being part of the TGA, as you can see you are the ones truly making this possible!

TimeGhostHistory

Oh and one more thing, the biggest damage is not that we miss out on money - the income per view is lousy, in fact very lousy on YouTube even when your monetized. What we're most bummed about is that they recommend non-monetized videos almost 50% less than they do with monetized ones. As a result we have to work extra hard to get new subs - in the last weeks this has been going rather well thanks to stickier titles, more content and a few 'general interest' videos taking off in viewership.

Sorry, I had no idea that I could raise the contribution independent of the tier. I'll look into that. And, for what it's worth, I am proud to be a (small) part of what's making this possible, and I hope the team's efforts set a trend for other content creators too.

That is really sad to hear, since your channel is par with the best documentaries out there (or even better). And what it's worth, I am promoting your channel to all my friends.

Fascinating and I had no idea. Shows why Patreon and independant monetisation systems are so important. I'd also be interested in something between the $9 and $25 level, say $15?

The channel has incredibly fast though, over the last 30 days it looks like you've gained 40,000 subscribers. I think that's pretty amazing, keep up the good work mate. :)
